' HAD THE TOWN GUESSIN:G,

The Greens' stall in Plifnmer Terrace on Saturday did splendid business and as a result ftheir funds were considerably augmented, 'by the sale of goods and holding of competitions. One novel competition was guessing tiie name of the "sandwich nuan," who paraded the streets bearing the words "1 am an old identity. Guess my name." The per,son!s identity was well concealed and aroused A lot of curiosity as to who he was; and as a result the exchequer benefited but on examination of the list of'names guessed at the conclusion of tlie day it was found no one had been clever enough to see through the disguise. The person proved to be Mrs G Murphy-, who had baffled all, even her most alginate fiends, by ihetr splendid make-up. At the end of the iday the results and winners of the following competitions were made known; Salad bowl, NO« 19, Miss E. King: dinner, -length of string, 32ft 94 inches, Mrs Torrey, 30ft 3m.; breakfast, number of' beans 631, Mrs Beck 555; tea, No. 36, Mrs Burns. CHILDREN'S BALL. \rrangements nxe well in hand for a children's plain an& fancy dress bail to be neld on Fa-iday week. A first,class orchestra ha® been promised lor the ball and as the prices will be within the reach of all, a. large attendance is anticipated.

BAGMEN'S CONCERT.

There was a splendid attendance at the concert given hy the Palmerstoii North Comerciap. Travellers tut tu-ej. Maoriland Theatre on Saturday evening in aid of the founds of the Reds, who thanks to the travellers, will net oyer £2O. The concert programme, Swing to the absence of three of the company's leading performers, was not up to their usual high; standard, but nevertheless a pleasant evening was spent by those who attended. .Mr Bert Pizzey, in his original comic stunts, in which he made several local hits, proved himself an artist of no mean ability. Mr Clarrie Belt's playing of the xylophone was a feature 'Oi the evening, while Miss Wilson's imitation of a lady watching a, drama at the theatre was clever and drew forth applause. Items ware also contributed by Messrs Blandlord, Dew, Lee, Oliver and Davis, all being well received; while items were also rendered by the Travellers' orchestra which were highly appreciated.

GYMNASTIC DISPLAY.

The gymnastic display hy the local schoolboys at the Parish Hall on Friday evening, which was organised by the Greens' Committee, drew, a fair attendance and provided a lot of 'amusementj-particularly' the sparring events- blindfolded. The entertahiment was followed by a dance*

A GOLD SOCIAL.

| In the great Battle of Colours in the I great "Joy Ray" Carnival, the army of Golds fired, their first shot on Wednesday at a social afternoon. .The-. Golds, although few in n»uiuber," a,re brave and haves, gone right into the fight and their first skirmish resulted in a, decided victory. During the afternoon, games and competitions were indulged in, some causing a great deal of merriment, especially the wool winding' and nail driving. The prize for ith© latter was a lovely silk bag and was won! by, Mrs Merwood. Mrs Bovis sang "Also Mine," accompanied hy Mrs G. P. Anderson on the'piano, delightfully. Evening came on all too soon, when all had to regretfully leave for home, having spent a really enjoyable afternoon. The numbers are selling very, freely for-the hand knitted garment guessing competition. Those desirous of getting tickets would do well not to delay too long. The are on view inj Mr Burns' windo>v.
