Edwards,, Otaki, wrote , -stating that ho had just purchased a ♦ three-ton motor lorry and asked that . 'i the Heavy Traffic Regulations wsigkt ( jbe modified in hiß case, so as to pornut , him to run during the winter months, I , .especially as thfc prohibiten seriously!. : uffected his living* . : : The chairman stated that he did not .sco that anything coukl be done. Me , ; would move to this The Manakau Branch of the N.Zi.l'.u. forwarded the following remit, passed •at a recent meeting of that body.— "That it be a recommendation to the - County Council that the road grader be -kept in constant use.' '•—Received., ■ , Main Highways Maintenance \ " A letter was received from the Main I Highways Board stating that in coniVection with the agreement that the 'Board should contribute one-third ol 'the maintenance of main highways, from the date of gazetting, that they would make such payments for the ' present on a basis of the expenditure 'for the first three years. If or the purpose of computing payments County Councils would, be desired to keep timeshoots for all men employed, -ihey also ' "recommended-that the length-system be adopted for surfacemen. The chairman pointed out that, owing to the increased motor trafiic, it would be unfair to assess the Board s contribution on this basis. The Council -had agreed to carry out the work,on a basis of one-third from the Board and 1 two-thirds from the County Council ' and this should be adhered -to. i The letter was received. Engineer's Report. | ' The County Engineer reported as fol- ( lows:— "During the period just ended i the weathfcsr has been very broken and .wet and work has been somewhat do(hived. The roads (particularly tho I main roads) have suffered-a good, deal ■ owing to the wet weather, and although P a large amount of metal has been distributed throughout the various Ridings it has been very difficult to keep the roads in . anything like good repair. The total quantity of metal put out was 3203 cubic yards. No. 1 crusher, 1031 cubic yards; No. 2 crusher 1217 cubic yards, and pit metal, Job cubic yards. , . In the Tokomaru Riding I have very iittlo to report. The northern end of the main road has been patched and it now in good order, but the; southern end is again bocoming fairly rough. • The portion of the ShannonFoxtoii i Road from Shannon to the Manawdtu Bridge is in bad order and will require a fairly large amount to put iu good order. . '*. Wirokino Riding: The roads are in fair order although the main roads are again beginning to break up and are still showing the effects of the recont strike traffic. The graders have been at work on several roads and the Burfaeemcn have been mostly, engagod in trimming and water tables. ' KawiuFoxlon Road metalling has been pushed ahead aad the first coat has been .put down. The; Lindsay Road extension has been formed. Also the extension to the Tararua Road on tho southern end of the.railway yard. Approximately 110 U cubic yards of metal were put down in this Riding during the period. Otaki Riding:, Although the Mam Road in this Riding recently received a fairly heavy coat of metal, it is again' beginning to show considerable signs of wear; The district roads arc in fair order. A new 18ft span bridge was erectod on the-new Waikawa South, Road. . . , ■ ''■■ ■ '.,, Te Horo Riding: A good deal oi work was carried out in this Riding during tho period. The following road s were attended to and the following quantities of metal put out:—Main Road; Waikanae,- 388 cubic yards; Mam •Road, Tc H0r0,"540 cubic yards; Swamp • R0ad,,102 cubic yards; Te Horo-Manga-oiie Road, 245 cubic yards; Te HoroBeach Road, 156 cubic yards; Te Wakii Road, 174 cubic yards; Rahui Road, Jlcubic yards. The lorries are at piesent engaged on the Otaki Gorge Road from the railway bridge to the Hautere Post Office, and when finished will complete • the Main Road, south of the metal pit. If the weather takes up a start will be made at the beginning of next, week with tho work of inspection on I the Taungata Bridge. .• ; As I consider it very essential for the Council to purchase a light lorry I attach herewith a quotation for Ford lorry complete, which I would recommend .for your consideration.—W. N. ANDERSON, Comity Engineer." General.
(Jr. White asked when the grading of the tokomaru Roads would be taken in hand. > ; ' The engineer stated that it was his intention to send the small grader up next w r eek. Cr. Harkness complained about the way the ; grading was being done on the Foxtoh Road. A good . deal of the material that had bison graded to the middle of the road -might with advantage have been taken right off-the-road. The- engineer explained that the bad weather at the time the grading was done was responsible for the present condition of the road and in a few weeks this road ."would be quite all right and all the better for the. work that had been done. Cr. Harkness also asked what was being done in connection with the culvert that had been promised to Mr. Parson - son, of Ohau. If the culvert was made Mr. Parsonson wag prepared to cart the same ami put it in position to the Council's satisfaction.—Referred to the engineer. Cr. Broadb-elt stated that he was satisfied with the grading that had been done and although there was a certain amount of soft stuff put on the roads it would be something for the cars to thrown off and save the good
metal. Or. Catley stated that tlie water tables on tlio main TCwlui Road required atf eritkm. The engineer stated he had this mat-
tor on his schedule of works for at tcritioii at an early date. Te Horo Riding.
Cr. Jensen asked what steps were to be taken in regard to the motor lorry that was carting fniswood on the Gorge Road; If it continued"the settlers would not be able to get out. Would the Council keep- the road up to a standard to carry the traffic or have the lorry discontinued.
The matter'was left with the engin oisr'to enquire into. Main Road Proposal.
Cr. Ryder'informed, the Council that if the Main Road could be 'diverted'''to' run past the Rahui Factory to Jubilee Road, Mr. Manns, who owned most of the land through which this road would pass, was prepared to give the'land for "the purpose. Civ Jensen called attention to the speed, at which som'o ears travellod over the Otaki Bridge and moved that notices bo erected limiting the speed to eight miles per hour. Seconded by Cr. Ryder and carried. Rangeis's Report. The County Ranger reported that, he had impounded -J 12 head of stoak during'the month and four cases were to be heard in the B.M. Court on I9th inst. These figures seemed- heavy but the ranger stated they w'ere not serious, as most were cases wliere the/stock had only been out for about half an hour. Application 1 for Access; Mrs. Duggan waited on the Council in support"of her"application' for the formation of about half a mile of road to enable her to have access by car to her property. The engineer stated that a grant had at one time been made by the Government for this purpose but had been allowed to lapse. Tt was decided to again make application for this grant. In the meantime: /fho 'engineer would investigate and see -what could be done. The customary vote of thanks to the chair concluded'the u&oting.
