HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING, Tiie monthly meeting of the Fiorowhenua County Council was held in tfie Borough Chambers on Saturday, the cliairman (Cr. Monk) presiding. Also present: Crs. Jensen, Broadbelt, Catley, Ryder, Whyte, Barber and Haiku ess.- Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Bryant. Accounts totalling £29.19 6s -8d were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. KARA ROAD.

The Mukerua Drainage Board wrote asking lor an explanation in regard to tiie position of the bridge over the Kara stream and whether the subsidy of £250 by the Government, and the contribution, of £250 by the County Council were now available.

Messrs Jiclteli and Gilmour, engineers to the Makerua Drainage Board, also wrote asking if the plans for the bridge had been approved as it was desired to get the timber ordered.

Tiis Engineer stated, that tills bridge went in with title Main Highways scheme. Under this scheme the money could come out oi loan instead of revenue. -Provision had been made im the. estimates for the bridge, but if it could be saved so much the better. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to refer the matter to the members for the Riding and engineer to confer with the people interested. Mr A. A. Flibbeil wrote asking that some assistance should be given him. towards the cost of clearing out a drain on his side of the Kara road and stated tihat the whole of ithe money voted for The purpose of cleaning drains along this road had been spent ou one side of the road only, whilst his side, was neglected.

Barber said he understood that the County made the drain for tiie purpose of forming the road and the settlers who had taken op the land on each side of the road apparently looked .to the County to keep them open. Cr. Whyte said that - the ratepayer in the locality stated that the laud for the itoad had been given to the County by the late Mr R. prouse on the understajnding thlait( the County keep the drain's open. There was no record of the fact, however. Left to the members of the Riding and engineer to consult with the settlers. SHANNON FOXTON ROAD.

The Whitanui Fiax-miU Go./ Ltd., sent the following telegram: “Kindly instruct your engineer to inspect your section of file Shannon—‘Foxton road. It is in a disgraceful condition and quite useless for our traffic.”—Received. ~ Mr J. Cameron, Ohau, .asked for a few loads of gravel to be spread on the roafi opposite his property to give access to buildings on his farm. Left to tiie Engineer with power to act. WAITARERE ROAD. Mr S. L. James wrote In regard to the Waitarere road, that the Council's notification to have the drains along tiie road cleaned out was not being put. in to effect by all of the set.tiers, and that unless the work was done, that .of those who had cleaned out their portions would be useless. He asked also that the £IOO set aside for this road should be .spent as sOon as possible to give access for . the Winter.

Hkkaraia . wrote staling that he was desirous of cleaning ,u-ut a drain titrough iiis property and asked that the Council request his neighbour lower down along file drain to clean his so that the effect ol his work would not he lost. Cr. Broad-bel-t said it was not cerufin that there was a drain here. Il would first be necessary to make certain. on this point as a man could not be compelled to dig a drain.— Agreed to ha.ve inquiries made. ARATANGATA ROAD. Messrs Moore and B-ergin, solicitors, wrote that their client (Mr K. i Easton) had requested them to,write that lie desired to have the -Aratanga,ta road opened, as this was the republic road giving access to his property. The road was at present ottl;. a paper road, unfenced and -occupied by other ratepayers as flax and farm ground.—lt was decided To investigate the mqtter before deciding on a course of action. lIEAVY. TRAFFIC REGULATION*.' Messrs Ross, Rough and Go., wrote asking for permission to Cart green flax by motor lorry over the Foxton— Levin road during the currency of the time in which heavy traffic "was prohibited over County roads and offering to pay part of file maintenance of such road.

The chairman stated that tinder part 5 section 16 of the Gounty bylaws these people were prohibited from carting heavy goods over the roads during four months of the year unless permission were granted. Referred to the members of the Riding and engineer for decision. APPOINTMENT OF ASSISTANT CLERK. The special committee set up to consider applications recommended the appointment of C. Fredhtling at a salary of £143 per annum; also that Miss Dempsey’s salary be increased by 10s per week' This course was adopted by the Council.
