From Minister of Public Works in reference to the electric lighting of Government offices at Shannon stating the Department will have everything order l'or the inviting of tenders Avithin the next, i'ortniglit lor the installation of electricity in the buildings.—Received. From secretary, Iloruwheniia Electric Power Board, advising that Mr Gunning;and their' Engineer have Ijieen appointed to deal with the Council’s request, to have lamps in Ballance street suspended in the middle of the road.—Received. SHEEHAN STREET BRIDGE.
Re Mangaore stream embankments Mr F. W. Furkett, engineer-in-charge of Public Works Department, wrote stating lie had been advised by the District Engineer that he has 'been in touch with the Mayor and that at the time of writing ithe Council was not aware that thene was another lour foot square culvert which had been put in to deal with the water from the north east side of the Borough. “As far as the Sheehan 'street bridge is concerned 1 regret I have nothing to add to mv remarks of Ist ultimo.”
In reference to the Slieenati street bridge the Mayor said it had been agreed at the public.meeting ol local bodies 'held in Shannon that this bridge should be erected. The Department were now wanting to erect* a foot bridge across ’ the stream with' two wires. He contended that the Public Works Department should be held to what was agreed to at the public meeting. Cr. Carter said the banks, of the stream as they are at present would not stand a oig lluod as i-iiey luiu never been graded and the stream had not been cleaned out, and as a result of all the snags' in the stream the current ran .anywhere. li no .bridge' was erected now were the settlers going to get their stuck away in flood time. It was decided on the motion of tlie Mayor that the Minister of Public Works be .again written to drawing his attention to the Council’s letters of September 18th and JDt'h and further pointing out that the matter of erecting the bridge was agreed to at a puiblie meeting and 'that the Council cannot hi any way deviate from! their letter of the loth, which was not replied to before the . work SOUTH AFRICAN MEMORIAL.
