BREACH OF STAMP ACT.
RECEIPTS NOT STAMPED. . At tlie Foxton Police Court action was taken against C. Speirs, of Sliaiinon, lor failing to attach sufficient stamps to receipts contrary to requirement of the Stamp Act. Tlie proceedings were instituted by lie Commissioner of Stamps forwarding two re- • oeipts from defendant lor sums Ofover £2 which contained only a one penny stamp each. Mr Bergin appeared for defendant and said that a mistake had been made. Defendant had. made Out the receipts at night and wrong stamps'' had been placed on them.. Other receipts from defendant toore two penny, stamps. There had been no attempt at evading the stamp ditty. A letter was read by the S.M. from the Commissioner of Stamps, in which he mentioned that some people were under-the impression that it was not necessary to place a two-penny stamp on a receipt for a sum oyer £2 since. Tlie S.M. said lie thought the rear, sou for the prosecution was that the Commissioner wished this’'matter to he brought before the public to clear' up any ~ misunderstanding on this point. ' He did not think a deliberate, attempt had been 'made' to evade the stamp duty. i- ■ Defendant, was lined 5s with 7s costs ’ on each of two charges. . ,
