Dozens of girls sporting dark blue mascots and favours gathered on the towpath at Putney during the boatrace between Cambridge and Oxford, were disappointed in their efforts to secure the autographs of the Oxford boat-race eight after their practice spin.
A police sergeant took up a position near the foot of the dressing-room steps, Mr. W. Pi Mellon, stroke, was the first o,f ttie crew to leave the dress-ing-rooms. When he reached the foot of the stairs some autograph hunters rushed forward.
Their move was frustrated by the sergeant. "Sorry, missie," he said, "no. body is allowed to interfere with the crews here."
Mr. Mellcn explained to the girls that the crew had been forbidden to give any autographs this year; and the girls walked away disappointed.
