The need of protection of the beneficiaries in private estates called for the establishment of the State-guaranteed Office in 1872, and the enterprise lias proved a boon to many thousands of people. The demand for this safe service has so grown among all sections of the population that the Public Trustee is now represented in one hundred districts. Tlie number of wills held on deposit on behalf of living persons now exceeds 39,600, and the aggregate is increasing at the rate of 400 a month. The cash balances held at the credit of estates and funds a,f 31st, March, 1923, amounted to £14,916,227 (an increase of o.ver £6,000,000 since the year 1917). The total value of assets and funds under administration by the office was £28,904,798 at- 31st March, 1923.
