WELLINGTON'S TIGER.
BEAUTIFUL, BUT BAD-TEMPERED. AUCKLAND. May 9. A beautiful Bengal tiger, the gilt of die Prince of Wales to the Wellington Zoo, arrived here last niight by the Sussex, from Calcutta. The tiyer, which was accommodated in a cage on dock throughout t!he voyage of 36 rftiys, is only lo months old, having been secured by the Prince during- his last shooting expedition in GwaliOr. His age from the standpoint of tiro human being, however, is no criterion of his size-or ferocity, lor bo*h are impressive. "He is t'he most bad-tempered creature I ever saw," exclaimed a young officer, in injured tones, upon the arrival of the''steamer. "I thoughC I would yet him to feed out of my hand but, oh, you have only to look at him and he nearly shakes the hars down at you." Great car< j was exercised, in the v matter of diet, during the voyage. The steward in charge was responsible' - for his care, 'and lie was personally tended bv. the ship's Indian butcher, whose liie was insured for £2OOO before leaving Calcutta. The animal's daily ,nu;al amounted to 81b of meat and,'fresh drinking water three times a day. : . ■ ,
