FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.
KEEPING Till-: DOMINION FREE. The danger of tlwj dreaded foot, and mouth disease gaining entrance into the Dominion is one that cannot be ignored in view ol present outbreaks, with disastrous results to flocks and herds, in England and California. In thiis connection' the Piako County Council forwarded a circular to the Horowhemia County Council on Saturday to the effect that at a recent mealing of thait hotly it had been decided to. write to the Minister of Agriculture pointing out the grave danger which existed of foot and mouth disease being introduced to New Zealand from, infected countries . and "asking that fresh regulations governing the importation of stock should hedrafted to prevent this. They asked tor the support of the Council in bringing the matter before the Department. The chairman said that considering the trouble which existed at Home they should do what they could to support the motion. They already had the cattle tick in New Zealand which had undoubtedly. been introduced, and which would spread nghl through the country.' Whilst notwishing to do anything to prevent the importation of pedigree stock they nvuist do what was possible to prevent I'oot and month' disease being introduced. Cr. Ryder supported this, stating that the' 'moltion* was one of tine most important which had come before the Council.
It was decided to support the Pinko Council's recommendations.
