The Challenge Stakes at Riccarton on Tuesday was responsible lor a sensation. Only Razzle Dazzle and Gaillard opposed Gloaming, who was a very hot favourite. When the barrier went up Razzle Dazzle and Gaillard went out together, while Gloaming was about six lengths behind them. When lie got going, lie set after them at a great pace, and after going about two furlongs he was just behind Razzle Dazzle, while Gaillard had already found the pace tcjo hot and had dropped-to the rear. Gloaming gradually overhauled Razzle Dazzle, and a hundred yards from, the post there was only a neck, between them. Razzle Dazzle hung on gamely and won by a head, with Gaillard six lengths awiay. The time, lmin. 24 4-5 secs, was a Now Zealand repord, so Gloaming must have done something exceptional. G. Young, the rider of Gloaming, asserted after the rs.ce that his horse was turned side on to the barrier, but the starter said otherwise, and his view Was supported by the starting steward. According to the latter,* Gloaming, who had been causing trouble, twisted half-Way round just as the barrier was released. Re added that the starter was in no Way to blame. It was an unfortunate happening, but for which Gloaming would have won. At the same time Razzle Dazzle must be given credit for a fine performance. The demonstration which followed the race was extraordinary and regrettable.
