HOROWHENUA COUNTY’S BIG ROADING WORK.

PROPOSAL TO BORROW £BO,OOO. TO COMPLY WITH' MAIN HIGHWAYS CONSTRUCTION SCHEME. A special meeting oi' the Horowhenua. County Council was held Wednesday to consider tlie Engineer’s report drawn up in anticipation -of the Main Highways scheme. The chairman, C'r. Monk, presided over a lull Council. Alter a discussion in committee lasting several hours, the report, which is a waiuminous one covering 28 sheets Of foolscap and dealing comprehensively with the whole question of sealing t'he main roads of the Coun ty, approximately 50 miles, was unanimously adapted. It was decided that a loan proposal covering a sum of £BO,OOO should he placed before the ratepayers almost immediately, the work within the County to be spread aver a period of three years. The fact was emphasised that the scheme would not necessitate the collection of any additional- rates within the Gounty, the saving in upkeep being sufficient to counterbalance the addtional cost of construction, whilst the gain in thoroughly up-to-date highways would be immeasurable. The subsidy from the Highways Board would a'lso be available. Fuller particulars of the scheme are not available at present, but will be made public at the earliest opportunity.
