Paraiparaumu 0. FOURTH GRADE. Weraroa 28 v. 'Levin D.H.S. 0. WANDERERS 6 v. SHANNON 3. The first senior match to be played in Shannon this season took place at the Recreation, Grounds on Saturday, but was not marked by any brilliant conditions, rain falling practically throughout the game, and .making the ball difficult to handle. Nevertheless it was a clean hard game throughout and was evenly? contested. The Wanderers’ back division were superior to the home team, while Shannon’s forwards showed up well. For, the first quarter of an hour after starting play was up and down the -field, Shannon heaving the advantage and on two occasions in quick secession their over-eagerness was penalised when near their opponents’ lime. As a result of the second free kick play was transferred to midfield where it hovered for some time, that a fine dribbling rush bv Wanderers carried play to the Shannon line. The latter, being awarded a free kick, got relief and the Reds once again returned to the attack and on the call of time had the Blacks on the defence. ' On resuming Reds again attacked the Blacks in their 25, but a series of breaches saw them penalised. Finally from a scramble near the line R. Moynrfhan crossed the line and drew first blood. Naipier took the kick, which failed to increase the score. , The Blacks upw got busy and carried play to the Red 25, and had the latter defending their line. Here Jacob had a shot at goal from a free kick, I?, hut missed. Soon after'the ball went into play, Wallace, a Shannon player, received a kick in the face and liiad to receive medical attention. Blacks again attacked on resuming and from - a fine dribbling rush were within an ace of scoring, Lemberg saving. Returning with another rush they compelled .Shannon to force. On the hall going out they came , again, Nicbolsop scoring at the comer. Jacob’s kick failed. From now on Blacks were having the best of it and .from a splendid passing rush among the backs, Jacob scored, thus giving tiie visitors a win by 6 to 3. Mr Burroughs had charge of the game. WERAROA 12 v. OTAKI 12. This game proved to be one of the most exciting matches ever seen on the local ground. Notwithstanding heavy rain which fell almost without cessation throughout the game, much good football was shown on both sides, although spoilt to. a certain extent by - rough, play. ! The game had not long been in progress when Weraroa, playing fourteen men, scored a try from a, forward rush. Hopa made no mistake with the kick. Weraroa 5, Otaki \Gr. Play now went up and down the field at a great pace, neither side having the advantage. With the advent of Mhckereth, Weraroa fielded a full team. From a scrum about half way Moses (Otaki) received the ball. He “gave the dummy” and dodged his way through the Weraroa hacks. Prim, always close to his mate, took a nice pass, and set sail for the line, out paced the opposition and grounded near the corner. A really brilliant piece of work. The kick failed. Weraroa 5, Otaki 3. Weraroa were the next, to score, through the medium of Rose', who smartly pounced on the ball after the forwards had dribbled it to the line. The kick failed. Weraroa 8, Otaki 3. Half time went shortly after.

The pace, fast in the first half, now quickened. Both sides were • putting, every ounce into it. It was not long before Otaki were given a penalty in a good position and made the best use of it. Weraroa 8, Otaki 6. Weraroa forwards were now breaking, up and the green pack were swarming through only to be stopped by Hopa, Udy arid Mackereth. Hopa especially did some fine saving. The continued pressure, however, had its reward 10 minutes from “no side.” A scrum near the White line saw Jacob send his backs away. All the Weraroa backs were out of position and Prim, bad no difficulty in scoring his second try. An easy kick failed. Otaki 9, Weraroia 8.

The play now went into Otaki’s territory and it was not long before Hakaraia picked up between the half and 25 and sent the ball over the bar with a beautiful kick. Weraroa 12, Otaki 9. ~ , From the kick-out Otaki immediately attacked and were awarded a free kick near the corner flag. The-kick, a high one, was mulled 'by a Weraroa forwaTd and in the twinkling of an eye was scooped up and planted over the line by a Green forward. Otaki 12, Weraroa 12., , ~ , The game depended on the kick, which was from almost in front, but. the responsibility appeared too great for the kicker arid the hall went under the bar. So a sensational game ended. Mr O. K. Davies carried the whistle. ■' , . • THIRD GRADE. The Shannon thirds won by default from Foxton. The game was to stlart at 1.30 p.m. The local boys waited until 3 p.m. and then kicked off. The Foxton lads arrived shortly after. __________ horowhenua representative TEAM.
