UNSTAMPED CHEQUES.
TAX OF 2d- WILL REMAIN. Bank customers who want nev\ cheque-books will shortly find- that Wit cneques handed out to them by then Painters will no longer bear the Qvai impressed twopenny stamp which has for so long been so familiar to them. lUiey will not, however, find that tbit, means any saving: the hanks .will, as hitherto, ask the customer to pay ioi the cheque-book just the same ,amount as if each cheque bore the embosseu stamp. This is the result of an ar rang.ement which has been made bt tween the Stamp Commissioner ano the banks, .and particulars of which appear in the “New Zealand Gazette’ of 6th March. When the present sup plies of stamped chequebooks liavt been used up, the banks no longei be required to send the books to the Stamp Office before, issue in ordei that the stamps may be impressed upon thifcm, but each bank will account to the Commissioner once it. three months for. the duty which is payable upon all the books of chequt forms which have been issued to cus tomers during the previous quarter. This procedure will save the Stamp Office a very large amount of trouble and expense. This new arrangement does not apply to any cheque-forms except the usual form issued to its customers by each bank. . Cheques which are specially printed for particular customers must be impressed as hitherto.
