HEAVY TRAFFIC BARRED.
OVER COUNTY ROADS IN WINTER.
HOROWHENUA COUNTY’S ACTION.
The Horowhenuja. County Council on Saturday adopted a recommendation by the Engineer closing the County roads to heavy traffic for five months of the winter. .
The Engineer reported as follows : “As the winter months are now approaching and the roads throughout the County are likely to suffer very considerably owing to heavy traffic, I
would suggest that the Council consider the advisability, of closing the roads 5 for all heavy traffic during the. months of May, June, July, August and September as laid down in Section 139 of the Public Works Act, 1908.” Cr. Harkness asked if, considering
that the County was going to receive assistance from the Main Highways Board towards the upkeep of the roads, from money being derived from tyre tax, they were justified in closing the roads to the men who contributed largely to this fund. Cr Broadbelt asked if the first of May was not rather early to close the roads to heavy traffic. The Chairman said there was no use in waiting until the roads had been cut to pieces before closing down. They had a duty to the ordinary ratepayer and should consider them.
The recommendation was adopted,
