SEWERAGE FOR SHANNON.

COUNCILLORS TO INSPECT PICTON’S SYSTEM.

A special meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening to consider the question of sewerage for the Borough. The Council had two schemes before them, ■one from the Montgomerie Neilsen Co. of Australia, which was to cover the whole Borough at a cost not to exceed £l-2,800, the other being the Borough Engineer’s (Mr Edwards) which provided only for the thickly populated portion •of the Borough, the estimate for which was approximately £7500. A report was also received from Crs. Gunning and Gardner who, together with the Engineer, had Inspected the septic tanks at Palmerston ... North, which showed that they were, not tod favourably impressed with the septic tank system, owing to the smell that, arises. Tire Engineer, in speaking in favour ef the septic tank, was most emphatic that there was not yet any system that overcame the difficulty of smell arising from the effluent. During the discussion that, followed it was estimated by the Engineer that the cost to ratepayers for link-

ing up, including cost of patent w.c., sink, etc., with the Council’s system would he’roughly £2O. ■ Tt was also brought out during the discussion that, the rate for a scheme would be rougjhly Id in the, £l. Cr. Beard, in replying to Cr. Murray re cost, said o what the Council had to consider was whether the cost was worth anything from a health point of view, which, the, Council agreed it was. After further discussion. Cr. Gunning moved and Cr., Beard seconded that further consideration- of sewerage for Shannon be held in abeyance until such time as an inspection has been made of the Montgomerie. Neilsen system, which has been installed at Pieton.—Carried. „ r Cr. Beard then moved and Cr. Murray seconded that the Mayor and t.rs. Gardner and Gunning be appointed to make an inspection of the, Montgomerie Neilscii system at Pieton <": can early date and lay a report before lhe Council.—Carried.--
