BETTER TELEPHONE SERVICE.

WELLINGTON, PALMERSTON N.,

NAPIER.

WELLINGTON, Last Night.

The Postmaster-General (the Hon. J. G Coates) announced that the erection of additional telphone lines between Wellington and Palmerston North, also between Palmerston North and Napier, has now made practicable a complete re-aiTange-ment of the telephone lines serving these places, with the result that outlets for telephone traffic to and from the Wellington, .Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay districts have been considerably increased and improved, as is shown below.

The Wellington-Napier line is now available for continuous telephone communication between Wellington and Napier, This also brings Wellington into telephone communication with Wairoa and Taupo and other exchanges in northern and southern Hawke’s Bay, Hitherto, toll com-, munications between Wellington and Napier have been' restricted to the hours between 6 p.m and S a,m. Between Wellington and Palmerston Noi'th, two additional outlets have been provided, thus increasing the trunk line accommodation between these stations ; from three to five , outlets.

With regard to Palmerston North and Napier, although the number of outlets between these places has not been increased, quicker service is now ensured.

Wellington-Otaki: The providing of an additional line btween these places has increased the accommodation for toll communication by 100 per cent.

Wellington-Levin: The efficiency of this line has been improved by the use of a larger gauge wire, Otaki-Levin: The providing of lines between Otaki and Levin, in addition to the present outlet via Manakau, enables Waikanae, Paekakarikl, Parapai’aumu and Otaki „to obtain communication with, stations north of Levin, through Levin. Hitherto it has been necessary for all such communications to be made via Wellington. The accommodation.. , between Otaki and Waikanae has also been increased, ‘ Between Levin and Palmerston North, the providing of two direct' lines in addition to the existing one, on which Shannon is an intermediate station, has consideably increased the accommodation between these places and will facilitate the despatch of traffic between Manakau, Poxton, Tokomaru, Shannon and Levin, These rearrangements, in addition to providing quicker telephone toll service between the main exchanges, will also enable a greater volume of traffic to be dealt with by intermediate stations.
