ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr Edwards) reported as follows The contractor for the reservoir is making satisfactory progress with the work which will ensure the work toeing completed and allow sufficient time to elapse before the water is put into. it. The concrete must stand at least three months before a strain is put on the work. The work of constructing the hesd works is now being carried out with all possible speed. I hope to have this portion completed / before the general level of the stream rises towards the end of summer,

Cr. Carter asked when the construction of the reservoir was due to be completed. The Town Clerk said on March Bth, 1924.

Cr. Carter wanted to know what hail caused the delay. The Mayor said with this, class of work it could only be done at a certain rate.

Cr. Carter: Well, why should the contractor be asked to do an impossibility. • Cr. Gunning said the delay had been caused by slips which had necessitated alterations.

The Engineer said the heavy rain had caused delay. The reservoir would not be wantedi for some tme and it was most essential the concrete work should be done slowly to 'ensure a good job. TAR SEALING. .In reply to a request from the Mayor for particulars re tar sealing for consideration by Council, the Ehgineer gave a comprehensive list of costs of different classes of asphalting surfaces. In reference io preparation i. * Tf . . r : ” . ' ► ,v \

and tarring surface of street 21ft wide from McKegg’s corner along Plmnner Terrace to corner at Police Station, Ballance street, an approximate length of 20 chains the work including strengthening the present surlaco and a 4-inch coat, of fine stuff well rolled in and sprayed with tar would cost £SOO, repainted with tar in. three mouths £3O, a total of £530. He said a. very cheap job could be done foi about half this amount. In regrading about a mile of other streets inclusive of footways, waiter tables, and the street surface but not including 'concrete or wood work of any kind whatever say £SOO. The Engineer considered with the present heavy traffic unless strictly (regulated Hie foregoing class of work wmuld not last three months. Also that to make a fairly good job the cost could be easily doubled. '
