HOP BEER WITH KICK.
ABORIGINES’ NEW VICE.
A new vice has arisen in the Northern Territory—hop beer drinking—and it is said to be ruining the lives of some aborigines.
Two leadings officials of, the,- Northern Territory- the Lands- and Mines Officer* Mr. Glayford, • and < the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. -Leighton Jone&rcalled on the Homes and Territories Department recently. They were emphatic in their denunciation of the liquor, the effects of which 1 - on the drinker, they declared, were indescribable.
Dr. Jones considers that the insistence of missionaries on,the aborigines The hop beer, says Mr. Clayford, has been analysed, and has been found to be 7 per cent proof spirit. A black, sediment in> it was said to be tobacco.
