Beard, Curraii, Gardner, Butt Hyde, Gunning and the engineer (Mr, Edwards). Correspondence. An application was received to rent the Borough Council's house in Stout street when additions have been made. —Applicant to bp informed that when house is ready for occupation, applications will be called and a ballot taken, /

From Mr. 'E. T. Moody, solicitor, acting on behalf *£ Mr. J. A. Swindlehurst, requesting payment for draining work carried uut for the Council in the Otauru stream. —On the motion of the Mayor the Council decided to inform Mr. Moody that they arc hot prepared to pay any money until the work is done to the satisfaction of the engineer.

From Messrs Park and Adams, solicitors, re easement 'for pipe line for Shannon waterworks scheme through lot 3, part section S, block XV, Mt. Robinson Survey District, that a reply has been received from, the Public Works Department, the owners of the property,- consenting to the casement; subject to revocation without compensation when public interests require such action, also that a rental of £1 per. annum will be charged and that the pipes be lafid underground.—The terms were agreed to and the easement is to be prepared. From Department of Health notifying the Council that a notice has been gazetted, placing part of the Mangaore stream under the Borough Council. — Received. Engineer's Eeport.

The engineer (Mr. R. Edwards) reported as follows: —"I have to report that I have made Very satisfactory arrangements with the Spiral Ldck Bar Pipe Co. for the supply of bends for the 8-inch pipes and the bell mouth pieces for the reservoir. I have got an approximate 'estimate for the making of steel bends for the 6-inch pipes between the reservoir and the intake. In this case the firm is a Palmerston North engine'ering works.

The work of excavating the pipe track in rock between the bridge below the power house and the intake is almost complete; the gang at this job are not always able to work owing to the high level' in the Mangaore stream and when not working at this section they are at work on the trenches, for both b'-inch and 8-inch .pipes and are making good progress.' All the flat portion for the 6-inch pipes is practically completed and 60 chains of 8-inch pipe trench extending from the reservoir site to Shannon is excavated. This latter work is averaging about 18s per chain, a sum much below what I expected it to cost. The part I tested by calculation is about the heaviest portion of the work. The 6-inch pipes have also been carried along the trench by the gang. The' tools and material for laying have been arranged for, and I'expect the work of laying the 6-inch pipes to be commenced in about a week. I have ordered the timber for the galleries which will be made at Shannon. The work of excavating the reservoir basin- is finished and it is now being prepared for the concrete lining. I expect the contractor to commence laying in the concrete'in about a week's time.

Provision for drainage into Mangaoro through stopbank.— I beg to suggest that the Public Works Department be asked to -supply, the Council with the number and size of the openings under the stopbank into the Mangaorc stream and the position of same as far as concerns the drainage of the Borough not necessarily within the Borough boundaries. The bridge over the Otauru cut is just about completed and should be complete this week. It was decided that the Public Works Department be asked to supply the information asked for and that the engineer be given power to confer with - the Public Works officers." Roadman's Report.

The roadman (Mr. F. Haley) reported that C 5 yards of metal had been carted on to Clapham and Ballance streets. The footpath in. front of t:i» railway station has been completed a.v> the road in front has been metanect. The strip of road in front of Mr. Gunning's store ha.s been cleared and IcvcU'ed ready for ploughing and grasping down at a later date. General. Cr. Beard reported that the water trough near the Albion Hotel was now completed and ho would like to se'e the water turned on without delay.—Mi\ Wattcrston was appointed to carry out the work of putting in the pipes, the Mayor to make the necessary arrangements.
