THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
. • MINISTERIAL CAUTION. “The question of the establishment of an Agricultural College at the Central Development Farm has not been discussed since I have been in office; it is in abeyance,’’ replied the Munster of Internal Affairs, Hon. R. Bollard to an enquiry made by a. News reporter, last week. “I could not go so far as to say that this College will be put there. I know Mr Massey is of the opinion that there should be another College, but he cannot give it now.” As to the Howard Trust the money had to be spent on a collegia in Hawkes Bay. Whether the land was suitable for such a purpose was a question which had yet to be decided. The position of the Central Development Farm, had changed, he was informed, and it was now paying its way. ' , Regarding agricultural education generally the Minister drew attention to a scheme now being tried out in Taranaki under which experimental plots of suitable acreage wore established on the properties of different farmers. The owners did the cultivation and the experiments were made by. the Agricultural Department’s officers. It was argued that farmers in other districts could not go to State Farms to sec what was being; done, and that the Taranaki scheme was a better idea which should he developed throughout the country. It was also said that the State Farms had served their purpose,»but this was not the opinion l of the Government.
