NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.
WANGANUI, Last Night. The swimming championship meeting was continued to.day and to-night Again there was fine weather, a largo attendance and excellent swimming. Results: — 220 yards championship. —First heat: C Atkinson (Canterbury) 1, E. Bradley (Auckland) 2, L. Fairgrey (Auckland) 3. The only starters. Atkinson and Bradley were together over the first two laps, when Atkinson forged ahead arid won by several yards. The third man was a couple of yards further back. Time, 2.41 1-T>. Second heat: N. Batchelor (Canterbury) 1, E. V. Cunnold (Auckland) 2, C Claridge (Wellington) 3. Also swam. A. Adamson (Hawke's Bay). Adamson had a slight lead at .the end of the second lap, but Batchelor then took charge and won by a couple of yards from Cunnold, who finished well, with Claridge close up. Time, 2.41 3.5. Third heat: W. Smith (Auckland) 1, J. Enwright (Auckland) 2, D. Murrell (Wellington) 3. Also started: F. McKeague (Hawke's Bay) Smith quickly established a lead and was a couple of yards to the good after four lengths had been covered, with Enwright second, just a touch aheiad of Murrell. There was practically no change to the end, Smith winning by a couple of yards -from Enwright, who appeared to b e taking things comfortably. Murrell was close up, third. The time was 2.45 4-5. Final: N. S. Batchelor. (Canterbury) 1, J. Enwright (Auckland) 2, W. F Smith (Auckland) 3. Also swam: E. Bradley (Auckland), C. Atkinson (Canterbury), E. V. Cunnold (Auckland), The field was bunched over most of the distance, with Smith in lead and Batchlor and Enwright handy. With 50 yards to go, Batchelor forged to the front and with a fast sprint, won by a foot from Enwright, with Smith a ya,rd further hack. Time 2.48 2-5.
75 yards intermediate girls cham. pionship —First heat: M. Farquhar (Auckland) 1, J. Whyman (Wanganui) 2, R. Miller (Otago) 3. Also started: 'Miss Lynch. From a even break, Miss Farquhar soon established a slight lead from Miss Whyman, eventually winning by two yards. Miss Miller was three yards away. Time, 53 2-5. Second heat: M. Jepson (Otago) 1, A. Mather (Canterbury) 2, D. Brent (Wanganui) 3. Also started: A. Pataka and P. Sevenson (both of Wanganui). Miss Jepson, with a very fast stroke, went to the front from the jump and won com. fortably Third heat: P. Page (Auckland 1, M. Bell (Auckland) 2, E. Hannan (Canterbury) 3. Also swam. E. Grant (Auckland), M. Ansle y (Wanganui). 'Miss Hannan had a slight lead over the first lapi but Miss Bell then took charge and led to within a yard of the finish, being beaten by * touch. Time, 53 2-5. 880 yards intermediate boys championship.—D. Lindsay (South Canterbury) 1, A. Barker (Auckland) 2, A. Stokes (Canterbury) 3. Also started: M. Ellingham (Hawke's Bay) H. Rose (Hawke's Bay), W. Watson (Wellington). Lindsay led from the start, finally winning easily by 45 yards with Stokes ten yards away. Time/' 13 minutes 7 seconds^ 50 yards junior girl's breast-stroke championship—E. Anderson (Wan. ganui) 1, S. Breen., (Wellington) 2. B. Hammond (Wanganui) 3. The only starters. This was a close race all the way. Miss Anderson won by a foot, with'Miss Hammond close up. Time,.46 3-5 sec. 220 yards Ladies' breast-stroke championship.—Miss L. L. Friedman (Hawke's Bay) 1, Miss A. Imandt (Wellington)* 2, 'Miss 'A. Potato (Wanganui) 3. The only swimmers.. Miss Friedman went to the front in the early stages and Avon easily by ten yards. Miss Potaka was 4 yards away. Time, 3 55 2.5.
75 yards intermediate girl's championship, Final: M. Jepson (Otago) >l, M. Bell (Auckland) 2, P. Page (Auckland) 3. Also swam: M t Farquhar (Auckland), J. Whyman (Wanganui), A. Mather (Canterbury). Won by a yard, the third girl a touch away. Time, 51 3.5.
150 yards back-stroke championship, —First heat: T. Moorhousu (Wellington) 1, C. Atkinson (Canter, bury) 2. Also swam. G, Stephens X Auckland), —. Stockley (South Auckland). Won by several yards. Atkinson just beating Stockley. Time, 2.4. Second heat: N. Batchelor (Canterbury) 1, L. Fairgray (Auckland) 2. Also started: Evatt (Wellington), Batchelor was in front all the way, and Avon by four yards. Evatt gave up after covering half the distance. Time, 2.7 2-5. Final: T. Moorhouse 1, L. Fairgray 2, N. S. Batchelor 3 Won by 1\ yards, with Batchelor' close up, third. The time, 1.57 2-5, is a New. Zealand record.
Diving championship, intermediate boys.—R. Blewden (H. 8.) 1, D. M. Mulvahill (Auckland) 2, R. Payton (Otago) 3. 75yds. junior boys, breaststroke championship.—S. Loader (Canterbury) 1, W. Cameron (Canterbury) 2, G. Bridson (Auckland) 3. Also started: L. Fitch (Wellington), C. Thrush (Wanganui). The field kept together all the way, Loader winning by a touch, Avith the others close up. Time, 53 l-ssec.
