The senior Manawatu representative team that journeyed to Levin on Tuesday was victorious in its match with Horowhenua, defeating the home team by five wickets and 9 runs. Horowhenua batted first and compiled a very poor .48. Mason jmd Hughes opened up against the bowling of Harrison and Hope. Mason notched a two, and was then caught, by Thomson, off Harrison. O'Connor joined Hughes, and did all the scoring, the second wicket falling at 12. After that the scoring mounted up gradually, and the board showed 46 at the fall,of the fifth wicket. A procession then resulted, thanks to the successful trundling of Hope and Mullins, and of the remaining batsmen, six were dismissed for a “duck” apiece, the total for the innings being 48. Although no batsman failed to register a score, Manawatu’s response was by no means brilliant, but 78 resulting from the innings. Trevena and Liddell were the opening men, the partnership resulting” in 11, of which 4 were contributed by Trevena. Mullins joined Liddell, but only two had been obtained by the batsmen before Liddell was clean bowled by Sloan. With Lye and Mullins being brought together, the figures on the board increased with freedom, and the score had been taken to 36 before Mullins also succumbed to Sloan. The score mounted, however, and the fall of the last wicket showed 78 up. Horowhenua’s second advent to the crease was much more productive than.their first, the innings realising 110. They batted very steady and confidently and with, greater freedom of hitting- The performance of the innings was that of Sloan, who knocked up a most commendable 35. Hope and Harrison did great damage with the leather. It cost Manawatu five wickets to compile the 80 runs needed. Trevena (29) and Burke (21) were the doublefigure contributors. Thus Manawatu won by five wickets and nine runs.
