WOULD MARRY CHINESE.
WOMAN’S. VAIN PLEA. THREE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. “i am not going to let her live with a Chinaman ii there is a possible chance of stopping her,” said Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Auckland Police Court on Saturday, when dealing with a young white woman, Jean Fang, alias Jean Rowlings (Mr Hogg) who admitted charges of drunkenness and stealing a fountain pen, the property of a Chinaman at Takapuna, and who expressed her - desire to marry the Chinaman. Accused ha visited, the Ohinaman’s dwelling, ana after her departure his fountain pen was missed. It was late,r found in ihe woman’s possession. In. asking that accused might he given a chance, counsel said that the iChinaanan was quite willing to marry her, aiid she wanted to marry him. She preferred that course to going to a Salvation Army 'institution. Mr Hogg admitted that it was hard to understand how the young woman, who was well educated and intelligent, should wish to marry a Chinese, and it was unfortunate, for alliances of this nature were not viewed favourably in this, country, hut there seemed to he no way of preventing her doing so. He understood her family would have nothing more to do with her. Mr Hunt (to accused): Do you mean to say that you want to live wiihjgps Chinaman? —I want to mar-jy-fum. In reply to the magistrate, Adjutant Gordon said she knew the young woman well. She had come from a good home in Nelson, and was an intelligent girl, but though everything possible had. been done for her it had been of no use. Efforts to persuade her to give up the life she was now leading had proved fruitless. She seemed determined to marry the Chinaman. The magistrate remarked that he would not let accused go so that she couild marry the Chinaman. He would ‘ give her three months’ imprisonment for the theft. That would give her time to think the matter over.
