YOUNG WOMEN'S LAPSE.
'' This girl was committed to the Caversham Industrial School in 1921, and since her admittance she has absconded on several occasions," declared Senior-Sergeant Lander at Wollipg-* ton yesterday morning when referring to a 18-year-old girl named Ethel Haywood, who was charged with theft and absconding from the industrial school. "She was sent to the school from Christchurch as her parents could not keep h|3r under control." The defendant then went to domestic service, but she absconded and came on to Wellington, where she made friends with a respectable girl, and together they went to a camp, at ,Lyall Bay. It was while there that the accused stole a number of articles, valued at £8 6s 6d, the property of her landlady, and took them to the camp at the bay." In reply to a question, Senior-Ser-geant Lander stated that the educational authorities did not want the girl back, and the only thing to do seemed to be to send her to Point Halswell. »
His Worship (Mr. C. E. Orr-Walker, S.M.) ordered this accused to be detained at Point Halswell for a period of two years. On the other charges the accused was convicted and discharged.
