THEFT AT MAKERUA.
A LAB'S ESCAPADE.
"James Slattery is charged that on December 22, at Makerua, he did commit the theft of a toothbrush and 11/6 in money, the property of Reginald James Barber, and that on December 27, at Palmerston North-he did steal 5/ the property of Walter Leakey." Thus read the charge I against a youth named, James Slat-' tery, who appeared before Messrs. A. J. Graham and M. A. Eliott, J.'sP., at the Police Court yesterday. Accused, who pleaded guilty to both charges, was not represented by'counsel. Detective Holmes, who appeared for , the police, stated that Slattery was 'from Weraroa, and had been licensed out to a farmer at Makerua, from whose residence he* stole the articles mentioned in the first part of the charge. The second charge was really one of breaking and entering, accused having entered the tea kiosk at the Esplanade and stolen the sum of 5/, although he thought the latter escapade had been prompted by hunger. On the sugegstion of Detective Holmes, accused was ordered -to be returned to the control of the Weranoa fanij authorities.—Palmerston Times.
