QUEEN CARNIVAL.

THE CROWNING CEREMONY

Possibly the largest audience on record, locally was -at the Maoriiand Theatre last evening to witness the crowning of the successful candidate of the Uueen Carnival (Miss. E. Eas--1 ton). This proved to be one of the most successful functions ytet held m Shannon. The first portion of the evening took the form of a coneen and during- the interval, in the presence of the police, fhe art unions held Iby the various Queen Committees I were drawn, the latter half of the ! evening being devoted to the crowning ceremony, which was performed by the member for the. district; Mr. J. Linklater, M.P. The ceremony wets carried out with dignity and at the conclusion the queen and her ladies-in-waiting were , 10-udiy cheered. A full report of the proceedings will appear in our next issue. ART UNIONS.

Fanners: Pen painted cushion, Mr J. Winters, Shannon- hand painted cushion, Mrs, W. H. McKenzie, Shannon. /

Maori i> Hand painted pictures, Ist No. 249, Russell Freeman, Shannon; 2nd No. Mrs E. H. Ranke, Mangaore. ? Guessing the time the candle in Mr George’s window would take, ten bum out,, which was conducted by the Fibre Committee, resulted in the followings tieing: Messrs W. Baker], K. Phillips, C. O’Regan and K. Watson, each guessing 4J days. The correct time was 4 days 12 hours 16 minutes. In the draw, Mr K. Phillips won the gold wristlet watch.
