SHANNON BOXING ASSOCIATION.

A SUCCESSFUL TOURNEY.

KNOCK-OUT IN STAR BOUT. On Saturday evening the newly formed "Shannon Boxing Association held their first tourney in the Druids' Hall, in the presence oi a large attendance, every" available seat in, tine building 'being occupied and visitors being present ironi Wellington, Palmerston North, Levin and the neighbouring towns. The arrangements for the carrying out of the tourney, seeing that it was the Association initial attempt were excellent and reflect great" credit on those responsible Alterations had to be made in the programme, some "of the contestants being unable to take their place owing to various causes, but neverthe-' less v all the bouts staged were' full of interest 'ami- some good exhibitions wiere witnessed. The star bout of the evening, Clinton v. Hamilton, the latter having, .replaced Black, was rob- - bed of a lot of its inte resit by Hamilton being ut in the first round. The men hadi opened out-well and: gave, every indication that they were well matched. As a preliminary to the bouts two little Steer Bros,

aged 6 and 7 years, gave a very clever exhibition of boxing for boys so 1 ■ young, their display gaining for them hearty applause, after which they were each presented with a watch from their Wellington and Shannon admirers. 'These two little fellows are pupils of Mr C. Young, who is also tutor of the other local boys who competed during the evening. Mr Tim Tracey, of Wellington, officiated ■ as referee, his decisions » meeting with the approval of all. The tourney was a success both financially and from a boxing point' of view and judging by the enthusiasm 1 of the the committee of the Association there is every xeason .to believe the Shannon Boxing Association has come to stay. The committee are to .be congratulated on 'the manner in which all .fthe detail's in "connection with the running of the tourney had been attended to. •Special praise is'due to the Association's popular secretary, Mr J. T. Bovig, upon /whom! a lot of\vor£«fell, also to the commit tea who so ably ■ carried out the' work of. erecting the sta'ge and ring and the general preparation of the hall. Prior to) the opening of the bouts .musical items , were rendered by Messrs Millar (piano) and H Hook (violin) which enlivened proceedings. , Among the visitors present were several of the leading officials of the Wellington and Mauawatu. Boxing i Associations. . ' " At the conclusion of the tourney the visiting officials Were entertained * by the committee. They congratulated the Association on the success of the tou | rney and expressed the hope that the present -was. the forerunner of many more such successful tournaments. On Sunday the visitors -from ' Wellington were motored to the Mangahao Hydro 1 ' Works and out to Mu'arijai, leaving for home by -motor in the eveping. . ■Kusaub 9.0 (Whitanu'i), v. Dowling 9.1 (Arapeti). In this bout Nesbit was tb/meeit Kusaubt hut at the last moment 'Dowling took his place. ; Kusaub opened the'bout with & straight left, following up with a nicely timed right hook. Dowling then opened up and both lads! mixed it freely until, the gong went. The second round opened up very fast Kusaub displaying clever footwork, hitting with long range punches which had little effect owing to' Dowling ducking cleverly. In the final round Kusaub freshened up and put in some good work doing practically all the leading; but Dowling; fought gamely and the pair were "making the pace a. cracker when time was called, Kusaub securing a victory by a simall margin, which, Was a popular one.

WELLINGTON LADS. Gastine (Wellington), v. Crowley 7.11 (Wellington). This bout was a very .clever one both boys displaying good footwork and nicely timed hits. During the second round Crawley forced the attack and landed several to. his opponent's face and had Gastine on the retreat, the latter being saved from further punishment by the gong. Alter the spell Gastine set out, to even matters, but Crowley * was equal to the occasion. Gastine missing badly, Crowley eventually forcing him to the ropes. , Honours were now even and the final round saw both boys' mixing it/with Gastine doing most of the leadings his nice 'straight left helping him to secure the verdict. LOCAL BOY'S GAME BATTLE. J O'Keefe -11.2'(Palmerston North) v. F. Eagle 11.3 (Shannon). This was the hardest fought' contest of the (evening. Soon after the start, Eagle, feinting with his left, and bringing in a well-timed right hook brought O'Keefe down lor nine. On rising the Pa.Lmerstonian showed signs of being groggy. Eagle Avent in to finish, but O'Keefe 'by good ring-craft got into a clinch and, saved himself; ,and breaking! • aiway landed la right ...and left to Eagle's face. Jhe second round opened with a straight left from Tragic, following up with a fight cross which shook O'Keeto, but he staved' v it off and an exchange of punches followed. Pearce opened up the bout by landing several to Carroll's face and head, after which the latter got into close quarters with Pearce, who received a good pummelling. In the second round Carroll adopted the same tactics, viz., in-fighting, in .which he continually had Pearce on the ropes, easily winning the round. The final round opened up well, Pearce making a bid for victory during which lie landed' a short jab to Carroll's point, rattling himi Badly. Anyhow Carroll quickly revived and was. punishing Pearce with body blows when the. gong went. AN EXHIBITION BOUT. B. o''Kee£e (Palmerston North) v. Wialden (Pialmerston North): This was an exhibition bout of three., rounds of two minutes, in which bath lads gave a very clever display of -boxing. ARAPETI LAD'S WIN.

Grady IQ.I (Arapeti) v. Hayes 9.6 (Palmerston North)/ The Palmerston lad was at a disadvantage in weight ,and height, / buft nevertheless , mixed it freely with his heavier opponent and made, a very.,creditable showing. Grady did moat of the pleading and* always found! his opponent ready to mjix,, Hayes showing up well \svith in-fighting. The pace selt throughout the! contest was a cracker, both boys appearing to be very fit, Grady using a straight left which. undoubtedly got him the verdict. Evans' 8.3 (Palmerston North) v. Dalzell (Shannon) 8.5. An easy win was* registered for Evans, who is a vfery ; clever lad, together with] the fact that Dalzell did not show any form! after the first round and it was only owing to his gameness that he was able to see the three rounds 1 out At the commencement both lads mixed ilt freely with swinging blows, in which Evans Wad the blest of it. Early in the second round Evans landed a nasty left hood to Dalzell's jaw, which shook the latter badly and from this out Evans was an eaisy winner. KJNOCK-OUT IN STAR BOUT.
