ARATANGATA DRAIN.

COUNTY COUNCIL'S ACTION i -

At Saturday's meeting, oi' the Hoi'owtienua. County Council a. letter \vas received from Messrs Clayton and solicitors, Palnierslon N., statinu rtliat'they .had feeen 'advised by' their client, Mr E. B. McGill, to take proceedings against the County Council to compel theiru to clean out thfl County's drain, which runs past- /their ■client's property

THe chairman/ (Cr. G. A. Monk) .said he would like to make a statemerit regarding this matter. As the Council would remember a deputation had waited on, the Council somie little time ago ,in respect of ia proposed Anitangata road alongside this drain. It. was decided at thai 'meeting that the settlers intenested were to-let the Council know which, side of the drain it was proposed that the 'road should be made, when the Engineer would prepare p-kn s and fetiuiates lor the work. As far as .he could see these people had no intention of going on with, the road. No reply had been received from them since the decision mentioned'had been arrived at, fend they could only conclude that the matter of the road had been dropped'. The Mast those people could, have done was to let , the Council know what they intended to do. They could have said that they' did not intend to proceed with the work, or if thley could not arrive at a decision us to which side of the drain the road should go, they coujd Ji'ave let the County know, when the Engineer would have given .every assistance. Evidently Mr McGill had now gone to his solicitors and was gping to take action. They had been blamed «for not going on with the work, but if the settlers interested did not let them know wfiait they were going to do the Council was powerless. The: Council then went into committelei to discuss its. action in respect tio the 'matter and after considerable discussion the following resolution proposed by /the chairman, and sec- , onded by Cr. .Broad-belt, was carried: "That the Engineser be instructed! to havjei thie Ara,tangi»jta drain cleaned and flood gat© repaired."
