SPORT IN ENGLAND.
Tlio' Daily Mail’s cricket, expert, reviewing the season, says that Rhodes, aged 4d, heads the bowling averages, and he himself admits he is not nearly as good as he Avas ten years ago. ~ Tills proves that the now generation of batsmen is less resourceful than the older. It has boon false!-- declared that the modern style of batting, in which the, drive has declined, or almost disappeared, is attributed to the swerve and the googlv. That is absurb, because the players of the old school still show that, they know how to play forward.
The--indications are that the .younger batsmen are returning to the old methods, and that the younger bowlers are rediscovering that fength is the most essential quality.
Batsmen must be made to realise that they will not be selected for test matches unless they are sound fieldsmen. This is the greatest lesson of 1923.
In an editorial the Daily Mail says: “There are strong hopes that Rugby in the coming season will recover its pre-war excellence. ' The forthcoming Imperial fixtures will demand Britain’s best efforts and we must find a firstclass team to tour South Africa. A severer test will be the New Zealauders’ visit.
“Rugby’s revival is largely due to the All Blacks in 1905, and the renewal of the struggle after so many years will be an event of tremendous interest.”
