Boxing Council, was presen i< arid addressed the meeting on tne lormation of , the Association and the responsibilities-and., privileges oi sucli a body. The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) presided. Mr Dawson, stated the Wellington centre consists oi seven associations, and .Shannon woulu make the eighth, which will make it- the largest centre in the Dominion. It is also in the best financial position, has the largest number oi registered boys, and puts on more professional bouts than any; of the odner centres.. He stated tlie Council hiad 36. associations in Ne.w Zealand. The Centre is the governing '.body of the Associations within its to whom the latter are responsible. Its position is-purely one of local government. There are seven centres in -New Zealand. Boxing is entirely a monopoly las tournaments cannot be carried ouit without permits
from the N.Z. Boxing Council and police. It, was a fine sport for 'boys as it kept them •' clean in body ana mind and taught them self-control. He said that New. Zealand was noted lor her athletes, both for 'physique and loyalty, and that boxing look a high place in developng these characteristics. He considered professional bouts'should only be put on i for educational purposes to. allow hoys who have been trained to a certain point to gain further .knowledge, and strongly advised Shannon not to attempt, to ! stage professional bouts until such Untie as the boys were well schooled. He stated the time, was arriving! when we would, train our own professionals. In respect to' starting the, association he said there were plenty of responsibilities '.and it was most essential the -executive should hive a' thorough grip of what they were undertaking. - He, then dealt a* length with rules, fees, regulations for ring, and other matters. An. application for affiliation would, have to be sent through -the Centre (to- the N.-Z. Boxing Council, Christchurch. He said that the Manawafu Association wish, to heartily congratulate Shannon. on the nio-v-e they had made and would support them all they, could and had, offered the use, of their' gear fqr a ring- Wellington will send v some boys to,, assist, at the opening, ilso officials. Other sister associations wished to heartily congratulate Shannon and he heartily welcomed them into the boxing world. Mr Dawson, on resuming) his seat, was loudly ap- 1 plauded for his address. It was then decided on the motion of Mr McKegg, seconded by Mr A. Steer,“ that- application be made to the New Zealand Boxing Council through the Wellington - Centre for affiliation a,s a local association to be called the Shannon Boxing Association, and 't-he following members to be the executive:. Messrs W. Murdoch, A. Steen W. McKegg, H. Hook, S. Cording, H. Kardie, T. Gardner, H. Burroughs, H. V. Hudson, J. T. Bovis, .1. Murray, and H. Creighton. Th-e s ecreta.ry was instructed to write the Manawatu Boxing Association thanking them for their kind offer of assistance. The chairman then moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr, Dawson. for his able address, which was carried by acclamation. Mr Dawson, in replying, sadcL his reward would be ; if they should show activity to other associations. '
A vote, of thanks to the chair terminated the' meeting.
