£216 IN DUMMY BOOK.
WINDFALL FOR WIDOW
How a box, disguised as a book and valued -at-a few pence, was found on being opened to contain banknotes to the .value of £216 was told to the Weekly Dispatch by booksellers in Charing Cross Hoad, London. “A library'' of about 15Q books was purchased front the widow of a wellknown London coroner, whose sudden death was announced about a fortnight ag<V’ said the bookseller. “It consisted entirely of medical works which we handed to our buyer to sort, out.
“As he was cataloguing them he came upon what appeared to be a copy of. Arnold’s Catalogue of Surgical Instruments, a large red volume. Lifting it up, he noticed that it was exceedingly light, and on examination it proved to be not a book, but a box.
“He was about to throw it away when he heard some papers rustling inside. He therefore broke the lock and found.a mass of crumpled paper. The crumpled paper consisted of five £5 holes and 191 Treasury notes. “We immediately communicated with the widow, and_ on hearing of the discovery she fainted with surprise. She presented one of the £5 to. her . informant to show her gratitude.” The “hook” measures about Ift by 6in., and is obviously the work of an amateur carpenter.
