BOWLING SEASON OPENS.

ON SHANNON GREEN,

On Saturday afternoon the Shannon Pawling club opened, l their season. Owing - ito the Levin Club opening their season the same day there was not.quite such, a large attendance of bowlers as u/suial, although rinks were present from.. Palmerston North, Otaki &hd Foxton. The club were not favoured with ideal bowling weather, a strong easterly wind prevailing, and rain threatening, but fortunately holding| off. The green was in splendid order and despite the conditions those present spent an enjoyable afternoon. The ladies provided afternoon tea which was all that could be desired. Owing to the absence of the president (Mr E. Spencer) through illness Mr J. Murray gave a hearty welcome to the visitors, hr the course of which ' he stated he had received a letter from the. president, who regretted being unable to* be present! but sent his hearty wishes for ai good dlayiand a successful season, He was also in receipt. of a telegram from the Terrace End. Club wishing them a successful season, while an invitation had also been received from the Levin, Croquet Club, inviting members to the opening of their season on Wednesday. Mr Murray stated the club were now laying down, a croquet lawn in place of the tennis court, which he was sure would be appreciated by the ladies. He thanked, the Ground Committee for the excellent work they had .done in preparing the green for the. players,. mjaking special mention of the veteran .bowlers Messrs Gunning and E. Butt, who he said had been among the founders of the Club and hdd helped to build it up. He then called on Mrs Murphy to. throw; the kitty and roll the first howl, after which he declared the .season- open. Play was then commenced, the following! being the scores of the various rinks
