THE SHANNON BRIDGE.

ENGINEER’S REPORT.

'The engineers’ report on the Shannon bridge Was received from the Public Works Department at the Council meeting on Tuesday night. The-report, which appeared in-the * "News” a, fortnight ago, stated the following proposals were considered (1) To- move the bridge down stream a distance of 25 to 30 chains; (2) to lengthen the bridge where it now stands; and (3) to move it up stream to a i point Just below the junction of the Manawatu river and the Tokomaru stream. The report rejected No. .1 scheme.. The other two were submitted with a strong recommendation. ,in favour of No. 3 scheme. The cost of No. 2 proposal is estimated at £9OOO and that of No. 3 at £IO,IOO. After a lengthy discussion, during which the opinion was expressed that the estimate for No. 3 scheme appeared to be low, as compared with No. 2, Cr. Hyde moved and Cr. Curran seconded "That this Council endorses the recommendation of the endineers to remove the bridge up the river.” Cr. Carter moved as an amendment seconded by the Mayor, "That No. 2 scheme be considered.” On the amendment being put it was lost by 5 votes to 3 and the motion of Mr Hyde’s c'arried.
