NEW ZEALANDERS BEATEN BACK. SIR ANDREW WINS METROPOLITAN IN RECORD TIME. (Received Monday, 8.85 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 1. Eighty "•thousand*' were present at the second day of the A. J.C. Spring Meeting. The weather was fine, but windy. The Metropolitan was regarded as one of the most open contests for years, at least a dozen candidates commanding a legion of admirers. Rapine was exepcted to atone for Saturday’s failure, and early took up his position about seventh, but at no stage did he improve. Barosca, aB anticipated, set a merry pace, which was ultimately responsible for Sir Andrew establishing a course record for the Metropolitan. Sir Andrew’s showing in the Spring Stakes enhanced his prospects for the Metropolitan, consequently his win was not surprising. The accident to Pittsworth was the occasion of considerable comment, many' contending that there should be no such thing as saddles slipping, or such like accidents, in important races. Results:-

Warlock and Cerise-and-Grey led the field the first time round, but the first-named rapped hard going round the back. Blue went to the front going to the hill the second time, the New Zealander following closely. Both jumped together over the last steeple but one, but Blue crashed. At the last obstacle, Pittsworth, who had just passed Blue, cleared the last - jump, but on entering the straight his saddle, which had been slipping in the run down the hill, collapsed.
