CHAMPION BUTTER-FAT COMPETITION.

. With a view to increasing interest in the class, a number of alterations have been -made in the rules governing the champion butter-fat competition to be held at the next Howtahenua A. and P. Society’s Show. Under the rules obtaining up ..to diate, if was necessary that competing! cows should he in the possession of the Association for six days during which time the test was made. It was felt by the committee, however, that in many instances owners of valuable dairy cows were unwilling. to send jheui away from home ior this period, during which they would / be milked by strangers, and possibly l-ret. Change of pasture might also mitigate against the best 'results being obtained in certain instances, and itwas accordingly, decided to amend tlie rules so as. to allow of the tests being made on the farm.. Stewards have been appointed for the different localities and will visit the competitors’ farms during the time of the tests for the purpose of seeing that the rules of the competition are carried out satisfactorily. The new rules, read as under: “Cows to be milked -in the presence of the society’s steward, on owner’s property,' between September 10th and December 4th, 1923. Samples to be taken 'from four consecutive milkings and points to be awarded*, as follows: 15 points for everv lb of butter-fat and 1 point for every lb of milk. The results of competition will be published and also reproduced in the Show catalogue. Owners 7 of prize-winning animals will be required to bring) them to the Show, otherwise the prizes will be forfeited. . . As will fie seen from this, the owner of a cow which he wishes to enter can have the entry recorded with the secretary, and at any time between. Sept. 10th and December 4th call on the steward for his locality to take the required four consecutive samples. The plan has been tried successfully in Woodville, and is expected to result in a greatly increased number of entries in this district.
