Although his brothers and sisters turn against the boy, Isabella’s love is so | strong that she promises to wait for him,. Knowledge of his eventually kills Pa Benton. Charles marries and moves to New York. One by one,' Ma tries to- make her home with her children, only to find that she is in the way. John, released from prison, has gone- West. Success comes
his way, but because of bis formei* disgrace lie allows -his mother, and the- rtest- of the- family, with the exception of Isaac, to think,,.him dead.. ) Failing of success in New York, Charles returns to the old home with his wife, Luck,, -a selfish designing woman. Unable to live with Isaac, Ma goes back to the house in which she has reared her children—only to-be-turned out eventually and sent to the poor-house by her first-born. Isabella- discovers John is alive and wires him -a plea to'come home. The • hoy does so, and learns of bis'mqiher’s whereabouts. His fury knowing no* bounds, he breaks in upon Isaac, whom lie thrashes. His next step is to (send Charles and Lucy packing, and then, hasten to- the poor-house, where hie finds Ma failing fast. Ba.ckthe two- go to the old farmhouse. ‘THE CROSSROADS OF NEW YORK’ A blend of comedy, romance and drama, taken from everyday episodes of life is contained in “The Crossroads of New York” at the local theatre on Wednesday.
