SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday present: The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Beard, Gunning, Curran and Hyde. Apologies, for absence were received from .Crs. Butt and Carter. BEES TO BE REMOVED. ' From Messrs Park and Adams, solicitors, re enforcement against Mr Grumw.ald of by-law of the Council relating to bees. They now held a written undertaking by Mr Grumwald that he will remove the hives from his property to a site to be approved by the Council on a night when the,,- moon next becomes full.— Held over till next meeting. NOXIOUS WEEDS. From thei Department of Agriculture stating that during the recent session of Parliament an, Act was passed, amending the Noxious Weeds Act 1908, and one of the principal amendments being that which confers on a local body power to declare that any of the plants mentioned in the second schedule to the principal Act,, except blackberry and sweet briar,' shall be, deemed not to be noxious weeds.— Received. BANKING OTAURU STREAM. At a, recent meeting of engineers in respect to the banking of the Otauru stream, the allocation of the Borough Council’s share of the cost .of the work wa,s £SO. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Gunning, it was resolved to approve of the scheme, the Council’s share of cost to be £SO, providing this carries .no further liability and subject to plan of work being received and approved >of by the Council. GENERAL. Owing to the serious illness of the ranger (Mr O’Connell), who is consequently unable to attend the Court, several pro seeu|ti oils against) owners of wandering stock were ordered to he struck out. The Town Clerk was. instructed to write to the committee of the Maori concert thanking them for the assistance given in raising funds for the soldiers' memorial. ' In connection with the installation of electric lights, in the Borough it was decided tnat four lights be installed in the Council Chambers. • Accounts totalling £43 were passed, for payment. , STAN SELL’S DRAIN. The clerk reported that no tenders had been received for the erection ol the bridge over SUrusell’s drain. It wa s resolved that Cr. Hyde, make arrangements to get the work to be gpne on Avith subject to the Mayor and two councillors being 1 satisfied. Cr. Beard wanted to know if this matter would be vetoed at the next meeting and the absent councillors require it to be reheard. “This sort of thing has occurred before,” he said. ' The Mayor: No. We hope to have this work in progress before next meeting. • STREET LIGHTING. A plan of the position of the proposed lights in the Borough under the electric lighting scheme was submitted and after a thorough inspection had been made by title councillor* it was resolved that the lights in Ada. Clap ham and Sheehan streets and Nathan. Terrace be. altered to .different positions, also that- the poles be Bft out from the present boundary of the Recreation Ground.
LIBRARIAN’S SALARY. Cr. Hyde wanted to know Row much money had been .received for the hire of the Council’s buildings' for meetings, etc., during the past year. The Town Clerk stated £2 13s had been received and £3, 3s was still owing most of which was good. There was also an account of £3 6s owing from last year which he expected to receive shortly. Cr. Hyde replied that his reason lor asking, was that he did not sider the librarian was being sufficiently paid for the various duties she had. to perform. He understood she received 15s per week and house rent. For this she has t.o look alter the library and reading room, prepare the Council room for meetings and clean ud after and had to .always be there. From his own observation of me dwelling she got free of rent, it was a disgrace and if it belonged to a private individual would not be allowed to exist. It was not worth the 8s per week the Council allowed ioi it About 30 meetings were held yearly Mrs- Niooll had never complained, yet he felt the Council should give her & fair deal.
