SHIP’S FIREMEN itf GAOL
The firemen from the steamer Mamma isays the N.Z. Herald) who were released on Wednesday after serving 12 days in Mount Eden gaol for combining to disobey orders on the high seas, seemed quite sorry to leave the institution.
From all accounts they regarded their sojourn in prison as a welcome change. Working, in the quarry in the sunny spring weather they made light of their labours, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Accordingly the prospect of spending the whole month in gaol did not appear at ail objectionable. “It would do me,” said one of the stokehold crew appreciatively. “A flair day’s work, ‘good tucker,’ and a bunk—what more do you want? And now thiei hard part of it is, I have got to look for a job.” Several of the men left yesterday for Huntly in search of work at the coalmines, and others sought employ n.^ent. .at various places in the city.
