SHANNON QUEEN CARNIVAL.
GALA DAY. The main streets of Shannon presented an animated scene on Saturday 'afternoon and eveningi, the occasion being tire gala day in connection with the Queen Carnival to raise funds for the; improvement ■of the Recreation Ground. .The committees of the four queens were all out to rake in the almighty dollar by means of stalls, collection boxes, sales of ribbons, street concert's, fancy dress football match, and numerous novel competitions, the whole providing a lot of fun and money, and lucky was the person, who. reached his home without having his bank account depleted. Shortly after 2 p.m. the members of the Miranui football team arrived in Shannon,. lattitred as girls, each wearing a ■ pig-tail of plaited fibre, their costumes being of the ' latest “Parisian” designs. They were met at Mcgegg’s comer by rep/nesenit(atives. of the Maori Queen, .who were mounted on a lorry. A "procession was formed and headed by the Shannon Band (the drum) they proceeded down the main street, followed, by all the small boys of the district. A halt was made in front of the SelfHelp store where the representatives of the Fibre and Maori Queens made their business known and by means of hakas and instrumental- items a considerable sunt of money was collected. They afterwards proceeded to the Sportsground where they were to contest, their srength at football, but after playing a short , time had to come back to town owing ,to raip coming on. Just as they arrived the New Plymouth down express came in arid the Maoris entertained the passengers with hakas, etc. The . .passengers seemed to enjoy the short entertainment for quite ia. liberal donation was made by them. In the meantime the Sports and Farmers’ committees had not been idle, for each had a stall, and it was quite impossible for a person to pass by without buying something or having a guess in a competition. . Saturday’s takings must materially help the cause a s everyone appeared to enter spiritedly into the proceedings and each of the secretaries report doing good business. On Saturday morning the position of the Queens’was as follows: Fibre (Miss M. Greedy). . Sports (Miss E. King). - Farmers (Miss E. Easton). Maori (Miss L, Kohika).
