PADDON AND HANNAN.
ARRANGE TO ROW FOR WORLD’S TITLE. . AFTER FELTON MATCH. BLENHEIM, Last Night. In a cablegram received by Mr R. P. Furness, proprietor of the “Marlborough Express,” James Paddon, sculling champion of the world, nominates his terms for the race for the title with “Paddy” Hannan, of Blenheim, the Australasian champion.
Mr R. Coombes, sporting editor of the Sydney “Referee,” has cabled Mr Furness as follows: “On Paddon's behalf, his terms for a race in New Zealand with Hannan are £SOO aside and £3OO for expenses.” Hannan, on being interviewed regarding Paddon’s offer, said: “I am in duty bound to row Felton first. If Felton won't row, and I think he will, I may be able to row Paddon, and earlier than otherwise could be expected." Hannan has practically made definite arrangements for his match with Alf, Felton, who has again challenged for ’tho Australasian title, the race to bo rowed at Auckland some time before Christmas. Hannan will confer with his trainer, Mr George Wareham, before replying to Paddon’s offer. Should a match be arranged, he hopes to see it rowed abo.uf Christmas time.
HADFIELD WINS HANDICAP
PADDON BREAKS DOWN. (Received Sunday, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. In the sculling handicap, the first heat was won by Fisher (55 secs.), J. Saul (22 secs.) 2, Hadfield (7 secs.) 3. Second heat.- —Cobb (42 secs.) 1, McDevitt (ISsecs.) 2, Paddon (scr.) 3. Third heat. —T. Saul -(17 secs.) 1, Goodsell (10 secs.) 2, Ceruti (42 secs.) 3. Filial. —Hadfield 1, Goodsell 2, Ceruti 3, T. Saul 4. The race was rowed in semi-darkness, and it was difficult from the official boat to | discern one sculler from another. [ After a very hard race, Hadfield won by two lengths, amidst tumultuous ( applause. Hadfield stated afterwards that he had an easy row over the first portion of the race, but the final stage was hard. Hadfield was later farewelled by residents of Gladesville and presented with a wallet, and a } bag for his wife. j After his heat, Paddon broke down, | as a result of influenza, and had to ' be assisted from his boat. ITi did not 1 participate in the final.
