HOROWHENUA DEFEAT MANAWATU
This game was played on the Shannon Recreation Grounds on Saturday afternoon, and was generally admits t. interesting games witnessed there this season, it Avas last and at times very exciting In the first spell ManaAvatu missed two opportunities to score in quick succession owing to not following up. In the first hall ManaAvatu attacked most ol the time and Horowhenua. Aviere lucky in getting a lead of 13 to 6. It was the general opinion Manawatu would evejn things up in the second' half and .although they made a vigorous attempt Horowhenua. proved quite capable of holding ther own. The back division of both teams handled the ball Avell whqn it came their way, Avhile the forwards left nothing wanting. The ground A\q>s in fair order, although slightly on the heavy side.
Five of those; picked in the original Manawatu -team, were unable to play, their places being filled by others, while, no High School boys were availably owing to the school .having a match on. All the members of the Horowhenua team took their places.

Kirihoma (Rovers); three-quarters, Gray (Hui Mai), Silbury 'Hui Mai), Procter (Foxton) ; five-eighths, Te Himi (Hui Mai), Mold (Hui Mai); half, Mclntyrq (Ofaki); wing, Roltett (Moutoa); hookers, Winterburn (Otaki) and Kuiti (Hui Mai); lock, Moody (Koputaroa); supports, Parr (Tokomaru); Freeman ;Otaki); back row, Fitzgerald (Shannon), Stewart (Te Horo). Horowhenua. winning the toss played Avilli the wind, defending the northern goal. The game had not been long in progress when Manawatu, by a passing rush among their backs took play down to Red 25, wherq Mold intercepted a pass and kicking lightly followed up, supported by the; Red forwards, and heating the hacks, Stewart drew first blood. Tq I-liwi failed with the kick. By a. series of dribbling rushes Manawatui gradually forced play to Red 25. Here Moki brought relief by a good kick to centre, 1 whqre from a scramble Butler (Manawatu) securing possession, made x hid for the line, .and not having enough pace and ifo one following him un. the chance was missed. Soon
alter McGonachiq (Manawatu) also broke away, but was. collared When near the line. In both cases had their mates lollowed up, tries werq almost certain as there was only the fullback- to beat. Manawatu was now attacking strongly and Horowhenua kept byTsy guarding their line. Finally Etamiard obtainq(l a mark right in front oi the posts which ne converted.’ Reds, now got busy working play by dribbling rushes into Green Territory, Avhere from a scrum near the linq, the half, Mclntyre 1 , secured the ball, .sending it to Moki, who in turn passed, to Procter, who dashed over thq line. Moki added the mo-jor points.
For some time following play was up and down the field, the green backs eventually getting possession, and by a fine passing rush from tire half way flag, looked like scoring. Terry being pushed out at the coiner flag, Greens now had Reds hard pressed and from a scrum Davidson scorqd. McKay failed to increase the score. On the ball going into play Red forwards dribbled it down the field, the outcomq of which Freeman (Reds) scored. Moki was again successful with the kick. Half time then Avent, with the score: Horowhenua 13, Manawatu 6.
On resuming Greens attackqd am after hammering at Hqd defence for some minutes, were rewarded by Davidson following up a kick and scoring in front of the posts. Butler made a poor attempt with the kick. Give and take play followed for a while, win saw Davidson by a fine kick sqnd the ball into Red 25 and the forwards fast following up, ended in Stratford crossing the line. Terry took the kick but did not increase the scorq which now stood Horowhenua. 13, Manawatu 12. The game now became very fast, Horowhenua, by .a passing rush just missed scoring. Manawatu now made a big riff or t and kicking hard soon had the ball in Red 25 and after trying to penetrate the defence were finally foreqd. They again returned to the attack, but Reds were equal to. the occasion, and gradually worked the play into Green territory, where from a scrum Rqds got the ball, Mclntyre sending it out to the backs, Silbury scoring. Moki took the kick, but missed. The whistle then went with the score Horowhenua. 16 v. Manawatu 12.
