Shannon News FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1923.

Quite a number ol' residents are laid up at present with, the “flu,” fortunately only in mild form.

Two tenders were received for the erection of the Soldiers’ Memorial, but as. both tenders were far in excess of the estimate neither tender was accepUed’. Owing to indisposition the Rev. L. Minifie will be unable to preach his farerwell sermon, at the Methodist Church on Sunday next, but hopes to do so on the following Sunday morning. The Cheerio social held on Wednesday afternoon .was organised by the gentlemen ol' the Tennis Club and thjeir efforts were rewarded by a large attendance. During the afternoon songs were contributed by Mr Andrew 1 and Mr H. Hook while Mr J. V. Burns kept the gathering entertainleid by. items on the gramophone. Afternoon tea was dispensed by -the gentlemen which was much appreciated by all.

The /euchre and, dance held' in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening w-s well attended and a good, time! was spent by those present. In the ladies’ section of thiei euchre tournament Miss Cole, was the winner of the ladies’ prize, and Mr Anderson in the gentlemen’s, Mis.s Ea«sonj and Mr H. Buckman receiving the consolation prizes. A dancing competition was held yvhich. aroused much interest Miss Stale and Mr Parsons being the winners.

The annual congregational meeting of the Shannon Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday evening, Rev. Mr Stewart presided. There was not a large attendance, but the several reports submitted and . balance sheet, showed that a, certain amount of progress was hieing made in the church. The only new officer appointed was Mr G. G. Mitchell, as treasurer. Mr Stewart, in thanking those who consistently helped in the church work, mentioned some interesting details as to the work of a pastor in such a parish as Shannon. One of these was that hie! had travelled no less than 4000 miles in the past twelve months by horse and trap in the course of his work in the Toko mam, Maker ua and Shaninon districts. At the conclusion of the business tea and cakes were handed round by the ladies. Up to the present time 34 licenses have been taken out in Wanganui district by opossum trappers (says a local paper). Some of the latter were formerly engaged in trapping in Tasmania, and they report the local skins as being in excellent condition. It is interesting to note that in the Wellington district 246 licenses have been taken out, bringing in a revenue of £615 to the society. The Wellington district, however, is a large one, and ’extends to the Wangaehu River and includes the Wairarapa. Up to the present time Mr. Hylton, the Wanganui officer authorised to stamp skins, has handled close on a thousand.

Messrs Howard Andrew, Ltd., announce that they will re-open in Mr Fargher’s’premises to-morrow. A big clearing sale wiii be held as soon as possible after thjg re-marking of the whole stock has been -completed.
