Air. G. L. Stead's horses, Royal Box, Tarieion and Witness Box, have been shipped to (Sydney, by the Marama, amt will go into the charge of G. Jones until Air. Stead arrives ’early in September.
G. Reed has been retained to ride Air. W. R. Kemball’s horses in their
engagements next season. Air. A. C. Hanlon, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and Mr. ’L.-C. Ilaziel, vice-president, have been reelected unopposed to these positions for next season. The club made a profit of £144 over the spring meeting, £.1144 over its summer' meeting, and £llß9 over the winter meeting, but the autumn fixture resulted in a loss of '{.Mil. The profit and loss account, showed a deficit oi: £2229 3s. (Id.
Royal Box is having something of a chequered career, says “Whalebone.” As a two-year-old he showed great promise. Then he upset things by a mad career at Ellerslic when he knocked himself about considerably, and it looked doubtful if he would ever race again. He, however, recovered, and created a bit of surprise by winning the Great Northern St. Leger. Soon after Air. Stead disposed of him to Air. E. Riddiford, but a small race at M.astci'tou was the only event he won for the latter. He was in the boom for both the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, but was unplaced in both, his stable companion Scion being the winner. After several other failures, Air. Riddiford passed him back to Mr. Stead, and the change to the Waikato appears to have dene him good. So far as the present season has gone 1171 have won prize money in events under the Rules of Racing. Of this number 110 have earned £I,OOO or oven The Great Northern Steeplechase winner. Alary Bruce, was a starter in the Lockerbie Handicap, at Ellerslie, but.was in the rear of the field through-' out, and was last to pass the post.
The. question of - an allowance of a jockey failed to draw the correct weight, came in for a lot of discussion, at the Racing Conference. .Finally the proposal which was agreed to -was that brought forward by the Southland Racing Club, specifying that if a jockey cannot draw his proper height, the clerk of the scales shall allow him one pound.
Signature (Bt. Amans-Lcgs) . who was greatly fancied for the Gisborno Steeplechase, was destroyed, on tho afternoon' preceding the race. The horse suddenly went lame after traiiir ing work in the morning, and on examination was found to have injured a round bone, and later was shot.
