He said years ago an engineer had 'estimated) it would tost roughly £<sooo for two miles some chains. In thinking it over, he did not pose as an engineer, but be thought the estimate high. He would like to suggest that Mr K. Easton, who was a contractor and knew this piairticuttar spot well, be written to asking him to submit an estimate 1 of what he considered, the work would cost, also explaining to (him why the Council wish to know. He thought if tbeiy had a present day estimate they would have something to work on. Mr Gunning said he was not sure, but he thought that estimate included tihe cost of the land required. Mr Murphy said 1 he did not think by Mr Monk’s statement that it was somuch the cost of the land, it was more a question of how to raise a loan for the purpose. Mr Hyde: We recognised that. But the loan could be spread over the Toßomaru and Wirikino Ridings and he thought thei proposal would be well supported. » Finally it was decided that Mr K. Easton be written to asking him if he would favour the Chamber with an estimate of the cost of the work. CORRESPONDENCE. From Shannon Borough Council re letfter from, Chamber iri respect to open-air speakers blocking traffic, stating that the by-law will be enforced. From, Foxton, and Otaki Chambers of Commerce stating the Shannon Chamber had their whole support in regard to an even allotment of rep. football matches, by the Horowhenua Rugby Union. GENERAL. Mr Hyde stated he considered there was. an opening in Shannon for both a resident dentist and solicitor and that thei Chamber should endeavour to induce a dentist and solicitor to come here. After the question had -been discussed by the Council it was decided to advertise in the Dunedin papers' for a dentist and also a solicitor, pointing out there was an opening here.

Mr Gunning said the time had arrived when he thought it warranted :a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in iShannon. It was pointed out that be•fcwje -representations fwlere made . iti ■would be advisable to have something ..concrete to work on and it was decided to write the Clerk of the Court at Palmerston North, Levin and Foxton, asking as a favour to furnish the Chamber with the number of Shannon cases— criminal and civil—for the year ending March 31st, with a view to getting a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Shannon. The need of a maternity nurse in Shannon was brought up by Mr Gunning, and it was decided to offer to cooperate with Dr. Macdonald to procure a nurse. It was pointed out there was every reason to believe a suitable dwelling could be procured. Mr Thwaites said a matter of vital importance to Shannon was the flax industry. He said he had noticed in the papers that members of the House had recognised the Government subsidy offered the flaxmillers for their experimental work, was inadequate. He thought it was a question ih which the Chamber should help to further • the flaxmillers’ request. On his mo- - tion it was agreed to communicate with Mr Seifert as to his views in respect to the advisability of him addressing a public meeting on the ’.proposed Government subsidy to the •flax industry, with the object of. forwarding a strong resolution to the Government on the question. The following new members ware elected to the Chamber:—Messrs P. E. Churcher, E. Southern, W. McKegg, T. Moynihan, W. Cochrane and L. Martin.
