SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.

TO BE ERECTED SHORTLY

it has been decided to go on with the erection of a soldiers’ memorial m Shannon, to perpetuate the memory of those from this, district who served in the great war. Tenders are now being called for its erection and it is anticipated that the work will be commenced at an early date. *A plan of the memorial has been designed by Mr R. Edwards, F.N.Z.I.A. The monument, which will be. erected in Plimmer Terrace, will be of a plain-' But effective design. It will tidke the form of an obelisk 31 feet iiigh, four feet square, standing on, a Base consisting oi four flights of steps, the lowest of which will be 13 l'eet ini length. Near the base of the. obelisk will be four marble slabs—one -on each of the lour sides—on which will be inscribed tue roll of honour. About the tablets the column will he ornamented by projecting members and a cornice, which in turn is surmounted; hy four tympani. The whole structure tapers from a blase of 6 feet 6 inches to about a foot, when its sides converge sharply to a point. The monument, should clearly and effectively indicate its purpose and fittingly preserve the memory of those who fought in. the defence of the. Empire.
