j SPORTING NOTES, i The name of Dangle has been bestowed upon the colt by Heather Mixture —Chancery. Dangle is owned by Mr. A. Symes. Charlie Jenkins has again taken up residence at his home township, Bulls, where he daily puts in a lot of work exercising horses. Since Stuart Waddell, the vetran Hawke’s Bay trainer, purchased Raumanuwhiri, the aged daughter of King’s Quest, has started four times for two firsts, one second and one unplaced performance, when she fell. The Kilbroney—Sister Radius gelding Loughrea, owned by Mr. L. C. Haxlett, of Dunedin, has been sold to Mr. J. McCann, of Melbourne, at a price in the vicinity of £3,000. This is the highest price paid for an Otago : bred horse, with the exception of Canteen.
It is understood that Gladful’s connections are to make an attempt at winning a third Grand National Hurdles in succession with the veteran Birkenhead gelding-. He may win some of the prize money, though many racing folk will favour the younger horse. After paying £IBB to disabled trainers and jockeys and £2 in ambulance supplies, the statement of accounts in jnnection with the Trainers and Jock-
eys’ Provident Fund, of the Auckland Racing Club Is in funds £2201 18s. 3d. Of this amount £2,196 is earning interest in debentures. : M. McCarten’s success on Patuki in; the Otunga Handicap at the Danno-: virke meeting brings his total of win-; ning rides up to 48, four above C. Emerson. With only the Wellington winter meeting and a few hunt gatherings remaining it looks as if the Fordell horseman will be premier for the season. Several New Zealanders got in the limelight at Moorclield. on June 9th. Kilroy (Kilbroney—Rosyth) won the second division of the Kogarah Stakes; Peroration got first place in the Welter; and Dialogue (Demosthenes —Tete-a-tete) finished -.third in the Moorefield Handicap. In seven rides Toohey scored three firsts and two seconds.
.-At a general meeting of the Hamilton Racing Club to consider the issue of debentures for the construction of the course, at Te Rapa, the meeting authorised the committee to issue £50,0d0 in debentures, £IO,OOO to be raised when required, and the balance in instalments of £IO,OOO as required.. Adrienne and Bonny Rill are now trained at Marion ,by T. Coleman and J. Coyle respectively. They were formerly located at Bulls. A good story 'is told by an English comedian about the man whose wife said: "Who’s that Dorothy you were talking about in your sleep?” "That’s all right, dear,” said .he, "a horse I won £lO on yesterday. Here’s a fiver to buy a new hat. ” When he returned from the office Ms wifet said: "You know that horse you backed yesterday?” "Yes, dear.” "Well, it rang up this afterndon. ” , The -rising two-year-old colt Penguin, by Absurd —Sea Elf, broke a fetlock at Wanganui last week, when being exercised in view of a Veterinary surgeon, with the' object of discovering some weakness in his legs. His trainer, Walter Rayner, cabled to Mr. G. M. Currie, who is in Sydney,- seeking instructions as to whether lie should have the colt destroyed or not. When, first handled ho looked like turning out well, but he had made little progress since and there appeared reason to doubt t whether he would ever show any of the brilliancy of liis brother Mcrmin. It is now practically certain that the old rules for weighing will be reinstated at the next meeting of the Racing Conference; At least five clubs arc moving motions in that direction, and the proposal of the Auckland Racing Club' that "in order to deal with those that were in the habit of abusing the old rule, the stewards shall have the right to re-weigh any jockey, and such jockey and the person weighing him out shall, if found to be short weight, be fined, suspended, or dealt with in such manner as the stewards may think fit,” appears to safeguard the interests of those who believe in true sport, free from the abuses which caused the conference to deal so drastically with the matter.
