RACfES AT MARTON. BLEAK WEATHER AND POOR ATTENDANCE. e ROSEMOUNT CAPTURES STEEPLECHASE. DEMOS THE HEATON PARK HANDICAP. Bleak, wintry weather, with occasional heavy downpours of rain militated to some degree against the entire. success, of the Steeplechase meeting undr, the auspices of iue Rangitikei Hunt Cluo at the Marion racecourse On Wednesday. Owing toy the recent rains and heavy downfall during the second, race, the course soon assumed a ploughed-up appearance, although, as the optimists say, it could have been worse.
The Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe), accompanied by the Hon. Lucy Jellicoe, and Captains Mundy and. Curtis, together with Sir James Wilson and Mr and Mrs E. Riddiford, attended the races. Although punters opened well through the good performance of Unole Bob, they were not quite so fortunate, with the other races. No reliable exposition of form was possible, consequently several of the places went to the, less fancied competitors. In the short sprint, a second favourite in Night secured an easy win from Paniin, the favourite, Importer, being ampng the also starteds. Rosemount put* up a great showing in the Rangitikei Hunt Cup Steeplechase, for which Ringi was . most, popular on the tote. The officials all (round gave satisfaction, and the promptness of the decisions, and, the attention of the secretary, Mr Arthur Way, were much appreciated, . The Marton Municipal Band, which was perforce droven by the elements into the grandstand, played a most attractive programme of music.. During the afternoon His Excellency presented the silver rose bowl, won by Rosemount, to the. owner, Mr Waverlcy . The totalisator handled £5728, as against £18,692 for the last Steeplechase Winter .Meeting, in 1921—less than one-third. THE. DAY!S RESULTS. HUNTERS’ -HURDLES, for qualified hunters only.
