MEETING OF RUGBY UNION.

VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED

The weekly meeting, of the Horowlienua Rugby Union was held Tuesday evening. In the absence of Mr J. Procter, who was. prevented from attending by school committee business, Mr J. Casey occupied the chair. There were also present, Messrs Sciascia, McMillan, Austin, Hutchings, Grimstone. and the secretary (Mr L. Carmichael). An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr W. Bevan, who was compelled to go to Palmerston North to- undergo an operation. CORRESPONDENCE, '

A letter was received from the Marlborough Rugby Union regretting their inability to arrange a rep. match with Horowhenua during their tour.

A circular was received from the N.Z. Rugby Union -asking for The name's of all League players for purposes of registration. On the question, of picking a team from Wellington, Manawatu and Horowhenua to play New South Wales, the N.Z.R.U. suggested that the selectors from the three Unions should pick the team, all disputes to be referred to the N.Z. R.U. for settlement. The school grant .was fixed at £2O and a cheque was forwarded for that amount. LOCATION OF REP. MATCHES.

The Shannon Chamber of Commerce forwarded the following resolution passed„at a recent meeting of thai body: “That this Chamber of Commerre deplores the action of the Rugby Union in voting that all rep. matches he played in Levin and cannot understand 'their action seeing that Shannon has in previous years been so successful both financially and otherwise in rep. matches allotted to them We therefore urge the Rugby Union to reconsider its decision and. allot matches to those centres which can and will guarantee gate money. This we feel would he in Ihe best interests of football and sport generally and would tend t to foster that good feeling which is indispensable to all sport and sporting bodies.”—Received. MARKING OUT GROUNDS.

The secretary of the Rovers Club drew the attention of the Union to the fact that the Weraroa, ground was rot properly marked out and' stated that until this was done his Club refused to play on that ground again. Mr Sciascia said 'that this involved the question of the Union’s responsibility in the marking-out of grounds. It had been previously decided that the clubs were responsible for their own grounds. This was Weraroa’? ground and they should mark it out,. The secretary’ said that before the match he had referred the matter o f marking-out the ground to the Weraroa Club and they had promised to see to the marking out. However, they had not done so. The chairman suggested that u would be a good thing to write to the Rovers Club that this matter was not one that rested with the Union -hm wps the .business of the clubs, and that the Union would notify the. Club at fault.—Carried. A SHANNON PROTEST. A letter was received from the secretary of the Shannon Thirds team protesting against an award of the referee. Mr Neville, in the game againsl Foxton, and stating that as Mr Randall had been appointed by the Referees’ Association, and also that as the referee had refused to give a goal al though signalled by the line-umpires, and that two' 25-minutes spells had been played instead of the customary i 0 or 45 minutes, an inquiry by the Union was desirable.

The secretary explained that the trouble regarding the referees arose through Mr Randall’s appointment as referee for the game having been cancelled but without his being notified to that effect, fie pointed out that as the customary protest fee had not been forwarded, the matter could not be gone on with. In regard to the question of the goal it. was decided to write that the referee’s decision in this matter was final, and that line umpires should understand that according to the rules of the game they should not raise the flags after a goal was kicked, and that they were only entitled to a voice when asked for an opinion by a referee who was in doubt. •

APPRECIATION OF REP. PLAYERS. The chairman said he would like to express to the Horowhenua rep. players, appreciation of the way in which they turned out for the game against Manawatn. He had been particularly struck by *the smart- appearance of the men who were a credit to the Union. The men who had collected in Levin for practice prior to the game were also deserving of the thanks of the Union. Many of them were working men and it entailed a direct, sacrifice, which made what they had done for the cause of the game more conspicuous. GENERAL. Referees and gatekeepers statements were received. The Te Kawau Sub-Union wrote asking for a junior rep. match. The secretary pointed out that the expenses of playing such a match would be too great and on the motion of Mr Scia.scia, seconded by Mr Hutchings, it was decided to write that a match could not he arranged this year. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr McMillan, it was decided to write to.Mrßevan, giving ln'm leave of absence, and expressing the wishes of the Union for his speedy recovery. Accounts amounting to £1 16s were nassed for payments. The secretary brought, up the question of the proposed art union for the purpose of raising funds for the union. There was some difficulty, he explained, in getting gold specimens, and asked if, considering the advanced stage of the season, it, was worth going on with the scheme this.year.

Mr Hutchings said Shannon was opposed to the scheme, mainly because of the fact, that fhoy had not got a rep. match. He suggested that a.fonthall gymkhana might he run with a seven-a-side tournament., goal-kicking, etc. It was decided in hold the mailer over until next meeting. A hearty vote of thanks to the chair

’and to Mr Nash for the use of hu room, concluded the meeting.

TOKOMARU 6 v. FOXTON ?.

This match was played at Tokomaru, but owing to the bad .state of _ the ground good football was impossible. From the commencement Tokomaru forced, the play and it wla« mainly the fine defensive’work of C. Procter and Walls that stopped them from; scoring. The. Yellows rallied and give and take play followed until half time. On resuming Foxton forced Tokomaru and from! a, passing rush by the backs Procter scored, the kick at goal failing. Tokomiaru now took a turn al the attack resulting in R. Whyte scoring ai fine try which was not converted" The Reds were soon, hammering away on Foxton’s line and had half 1 luck in not scoring on several occasions. Their effort's were rewarded however, C. Whyte securing the bafi from a loose scrum, and,, beating three men, passed to L. Dalzell, who scored in the corner. The kick again failed. Time was called without any further alteration in the score. Mr Hemmingsen was a capable referee. For the visitors Carter and Retd were the pick of the forwards, while C. Procter' and Walls played well in the back division.

For T’okomarui Whyte brothers played their usual good gamen in the backs, while L. Dalzell, palmer and Parr showed to advantage in the forwards.

The winners have a good team taking them all‘round, hut do pot support one another enough; time and ag’ain one or two forwards would break away hut, would receive no support. from the other forwards.
