RACES AT DANNEVIRKE.

DAY OUT ‘ FOR : PUNTERS. *

For the first winter meeting under the auspices of the Dannevirke Racing Club for a number of- years, the weather remained fine, but remarkably keen for all, but those who chose to keep moving Wednesday. Punters had a day out, and naturally with the exception of the last race, the dividends were not large. Nevertheless, an investment on each of the favourites was quite a payable proposition. In the seven events, no fewer than six favourites justified the confidence reposed in them by backers. In the last race, Elvaette sprung a surprise and refused to follow the precedent established in the other races. Patuki put up a great race in the straight. Considering the inclement weather lately, the course was very fair with a tendency perhaps toward tackiness. The attendance was not large ,and the totalisator handled £7812. , As there has not been a winter meeting, for a number of years, there are no totalisator figures for comparison. C. Bracken was thrown from Whariti in the opening event, but fortunately was not seriously injured. The prompt starting and decisions were a feature which reflects favourably on the controlling officials, while the courtesy Of Mr. C. J. E. Bickford, the secretary, was much appreciated. The music by j the Municipal Band, was particularly pleasing. THE DAY’S RACING. Following are the results: — HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLES, of 100 sovs.; one and a-half miles. I—Mr. D.
