FIRE IN SHANNON.

T . ' TWO PREMISES DESTROYED. Shortly after six o’clock last evening as Mrs JDunn and Mi' A. Grims tom were passing the premises in Plimmei Terrace occupied, by Mr C. Harciie, tailor, they discovered the building to be on 'hre, they lnnneoiately raiseu the alarm, but the flames having a good hold spreald quickly and the whole building was soon in flames. Owing to there being no water supply it was impossible .to save tihe adjoining building occupied as a residence by Mrs Coiaikley, and the flames spreading it was not long before, this building was doomed. As it was quite impossible to save any of Mr Hardie’s stock, attention was directed to reciting the contents of Mrs Coakley’s house, and a. willing band of workers were successful in removing ■ practically all of their belongings into safety. , For some time there was a danger of the fire spreading to Mr Scott’s auction room, which was separated from Mrs Coakley’s house by a right of way, but by the strenuous efforts ot several willing hands, who- put wet sack's on the roof' and the bringing into, play of the hose from the Albion , Hotel, which was worked from the artesian by the engine at the hotel, the building wasi saved. It is almost a) certainty that hat? the hose and a good pressure of water not been available this building together with Mrs Churcher’s shop would have been destroyed. .

At the time of tlhe outbreak a slight westerly wind was blowing. Had the wind been from the south, the Albion Hotel would have been in danger, while from’ the north it would hia.ve been a! certainty the whole block Would have gone. When the fire was discovered it was burning under the counter.

Mir Hardie states that he left the shop at ahout 4.30 pun. and everything then appeared to be quite safe. Among the stock lost by Mr Hairdie were fifteen complete suits.
